Government approves extension of humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees
29/08/2023 Duración: 11minThe Israeli government has approved in a telephone referendum a funding framework to extend humanitarian assistance to refugees from the war in Ukraine. The cabinet approved an across-the-board budget cut for government ministries of 0.06 percent, in order to cover the estimated 40 million shekel cost of extending until the end of the year the humanitarian assistance, including health care coverage, to Ukrainian refugees who fled the war in their country and do not qualify to immigrate to Israel under the Law of Return. On August 9th, Israel had halted health coverage for the 14,000 Ukrainian refugees residing in the country, citing a lack of funding source. An earlier government pledge to renew the coverage was not implemented due to sparring among government ministries over who would shoulder the cost. Discovering the Iraqi Jewish archive
28/08/2023 Duración: 14minThe Iraqi Jewish Archive is a collection of over 2,700 books and tens of thousands of historical documents from Iraq's Jewish community, that were found in 2003 in the flooded basement of Saddam Hussein's intelligence headquarters by a special US army team. The collection includes a wide variety of books and rare documents, ranging from 500-year-old commentaries on the Talmud to personal letters sent during the 1950s. Dr. Harold Rhode, a former Middle Eastern analyst in the Office of the US Secretary of Defense, who was stationed in Iraq at the time, recognized that the collection of submerged documents, scrolls and books was a unique Jewish archive. In a special rescue operation, the materials were airlifted to the United States where the US National Archive restored, catalogued and digitized the materials. Rhode will tell the story of the discovery of the archive on August 29th, at the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center in Or Yehuda. Ahead of the event, he spoke to KAN's Naomi Segal. Caesarea's aqueduct is falling down and other catastrophies in the waiting
20/08/2023 Duración: 06minA team from the Antiquity authority’s Preservation unit is today examining the iconic ancient arched aqueduct on the beach of Caesarea to see how it can be restored after a section of it collapsed a few days ago. The stone aqueduct, built in the days of the Roman Emperor Hadrian over 1,800 years ago, is located on a beach open to swimmers. Luckily it collapsed overnight Friday when no bathers were there and no one was hurt. The Antiquities Authority says it had warned the Caesarea Development Company on whose land it sits that it the deteriorated aqueduct was in serious danger of falling down. They said that they even offered expert aid and some funding to fix it but it fell on deaf ears. Prof. Gideon Avni, the chief archaeologist of the Israel Antiquities Authority said that the Caesarea aqueduct could have been preserved but despite their warnings the proper action was not taken. He also said that the long aqueduct to Acko is also in danger of collapse and needed immediate action to preserve it. (photo: IA

Tel Aviv's new light rail only the beginning
17/08/2023 Duración: 09minArchitect Amir Mann, an expert in city planning, infrastructure and traffic, who is behind the design of Tel Aviv’s new Red Line light rail's control and operation center said the new line would be a total change in transportation culture for passengers than the current public transportation systems. He said that while the new line would move about a quarter of a million passengers a day, the future underground Metro being built in Tel Aviv would probably carry two million a day. Only that won’t be opened for another 20 years at least and Tel Aviv will need to cope with that. (photo: Moshe Shai/flash90)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
