The 14th Armored Brigade stationed along the Sinai front during the Yom Kippur War engaged in among the fiercest and most significant battles during the 1973 war. Now, for the first time, the stories of the heroism and courage of the brigade members on the battlefield will be presented in an innovative artistic format, the play "14." that will be staged on September 13th, at the Yad LaShiryan armored corps memorial in Latrun, during a special event commemorating 50 years since brigade's heroic battles in the Yom Kippur War. A large pro-judicial overhaul demonstration is taking place on Thursday night  close the Supreme Court in Jerusalem. Called  the “Liberty Demonstration” by its organizers, the protest claims the judiciary  “doesn’t have the authority to nullify the people’s choice” and is calling on them not to “drag the state into a constitutional crisis.” Among the speakers is finance minister Bezalel Smotrich , head of the Religious Zionist party. The Hashomer Hahadash  (or New Guardians) organization held a conference Wednesday, attended by ministers and politicians, including Knesset member Mansour Abbas , head of the United Arab List. The organization started as a small group of volunteers which helped farmers in the Negev and Galilee, who were the victims of theft and vandalism. One of the most unique and largest collections of shofars are now going on display here in Israel. They include some pretty rare shofars including one made from a horn of a unicorn, or so they claim. In Britain, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has tapped Jewish lawmaker Grant Shapps as his defense secretary, after Ben Wallace formally handed in his resignation. The 54-year-old Shapps, who has no military experience, was previously serving as minister for energy security and net zero. Last month, during a visit to the Stella Maris monastery in Haifa, President Yitzhak Herzog spoke out against the spate of attacks on Christians in Israel, particularly in Jerusalem’s Old City.  "In recent months we have seen very serious phenomena towards the Christian denominations in the Holy Land," said Herzog.  The president called for greater understanding of the histories of the religious communities in the Holy Land, noting that it was the birthplace of the three monotheistic religions. "We must do everything so that the common life continues together," he said. Advocate Jonathan Jakubowitz, the founder of the Israeli Immigration Policy Center, said that yesterday’s rioting by supporters of the Eritrean government in Tel Aviv exposed the truth that thousands of these people were not asylum seekers and were not fleeing for their life.    Supreme Court Justice Yosef Elron dropped a proverbial bombshell Wednesday when he announced that he would seek election as the next Supreme Court president. Elron’s decision to throw his hat into the ring flies in the face of the so-called “seniority method” that has always been used to select the court’s president, and drew fiery rebukes. Israeli Public Diplomacy Minister Galit Distal Atbaryan has launched a campaign to gain control over the Government Press Office, reportedly saying in private that she wants the authority to deny press credentials from foreign journalists who are critical of Israel. The GPO, which acts as the voice of the government, also has a large office and facilities that caters to mainly foreign correspondents which include translations of the Israeli press, hosting press conferences and gaining work visas. It’s various heads have often clashed with journalists critical of Israel, but it has mainly been a facilitator for media coverage for decades. Noga Tarnopolsky, a foreign correspondent, said that the minister was interested in censoring foreign media coverage, but the GPO has already turned into a gatekeeper to keep out critical journalists. Thirty years after the Israeli government approved the first part of the Oslo Accords, declassified minutes from that cabinet meeting reveal the doubts of government ministers, of then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and of then-IDF chief of staff, Ehud Bark, on entering into an agreement with the PLO. Despite his concerns, Rabin still implored the ministers to approve the agreement: "The business is very complicated…There are things which in such a reality have no smooth solutions," he said. Three decades later, the reality remains complicated. Dr. Michael Milstein is head of the Palestinian Studies Forum at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University.
