At the Israel Museum a once in a lifetime experience has opened up. As part of its 60th anniversary commemorations, the Israel Museum has put on display the original Isaiah Scroll, which is undoubtedly the most significant of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Believed to be dated to 125 BCE, the Isaiah scroll is the earliest known biblical manuscript by roughly a thousand years. Discovered in 1947 and in Israel’s hands since the mid 1950s, the Isaiah Scroll had been displayed at the Shrine of the Book but in 1968 it was removed and placed in the museum vaults because curators believed it was being damaged by the light and humidity after surviving in the dry Dead Sea caves for over two thousand years. But now, it is being shown to the public in a special glass housing where its entire seven meter length is laid out in a temperature and humidity controlled room. The British Museum  has removed the word “Palestine” from some of its displays, saying the term was used inaccurately and is no longer historically neutral. Maps and information panels in the museum’s ancient Middle East galleries had referred to the eastern Mediterranean coast as Palestine, with some people described as being “of Palestinian descent”. A teen music festival is taking place in Jerusalem next week with many teenage bands taking part. It is a no alcohol, no smoking venue at a bar called Hetzi Tuki and the public is invited. Tracey Shipley, the producer and initiator of the Teen Music Festival, said the performing bands bring different sectors of teenagers together. At the Western Wall in Jerusalem, Ushers once again prevented Women of the Wall from reading from the Torah at plaza in honor of Rosh Chodesh Adar. The ushers refused to allow the women to bring their own Torah scroll or use one of the scrolls offered to the public. The Women of the Wall were forced to hold the ceremony at the entrance to the Western Wall plaza amid shouting and pushing from rioters. At the end of the reading, police detained two of the women, claiming they were obstructing the emergency passage. Anat Hoffman, the chairperson of Women of the Wall, said rioters shredded and burned up dozens of their Jewish prayer books. “We wanted to read it (the Torah) by women, for woman at the woman’s section at the wall… the authorities are keeping us away from Torah,” she said. Orienteering. It’s a worldwide sport of navigation running and it’s growing in popularity here in Israel.
