Prime Minister Netanyahu is  in Washington  for a previously unscheduled meeting with President Trump. Yesterday, Netanyahu met with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer at the Blair House. Netanyahu’s advisers said they were optimistic about the prospect of either canceling the tariffs on Israel entirely or reducing them to a degree that would avert meaningful damage to the Israeli economy. The prime minister and the president are also expected to discuss Iran and  the negotiations with Hamas over a ceasefire and hostage release deal, which have failed to bear fruit so far. Former prime minister Naftali Bennett, who is widely believed to be preparing to run in the next national election, announced on Monday evening the registration of a new political party under the temporary name “Bennett 2026.” A poll published last night by Kan showed that if elections were held today,  a new party headed by Naftali Bennett would be the biggest party with 27 seats, as compared to only 20 for the Likud in second place. President Trump has announced tariffs on products from many countries, including Israel, which will pay 17%.    Manufacturers’ Association of Israel President Ron Tomer expressed concern, saying the decision was liable to impact workplaces and reduce activity in the American market. The Qatargate scandal has shifted into high gear with the arrest of Jonatan Urich, Prime Minister Netanyahu’s close adviser, and Eli Feldstein, a former spokesperson for the prime minister. They are suspected of contact with a foreign agent, money laundering and fraud and breach of trust. Netanyahu, after he was questioned by police, posted a video claiming the investigation is another political witch hunt designed to topple him from power. The Security Cabinet has approved plans to pave a new bypass road that will dramatically relieve traffic congestion between Jerusalem and Maaleh Adumim and also strengthen security. Daniel Seidemann, an Israeli attorney specializing in the geopolitics of Jerusalem, said that enormous political pressure had been placed on Israel not to open the road. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that the Israeli government was doing it now because it was dependent on the support of the extreme right who have been pushing for the move. The Security Cabinet has approved plans to pave a new bypass road that will dramatically relieve traffic congestion between Jerusalem and Maaleh Adumim and also strengthen security. Over 350 million shekels has been allocated to build the road which will link the Palestinian villages of a-Zaim and al-Eizariya, thus diverting Arab vehicles from the main Highway 1 and checkpoints. Maaleh Adumim deputy mayor Brenda Horwitz-Prawer welcomed the move. She told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that it would not only improve traffic and give better security, but that it opens the way for expansion of the city and linking it to Jerusalem. Tens of thousands of Israelis have done hundreds of days of reserves since the war began, and they are still being called up. But reservists are protesting for the government to carry through with the law and conscript the tens of thousands of ultra orthodox yeshiva students into military service in order to share the burden. The Knesset has passed final readings of a coalition-backed law altering the composition of the judicial selection committee.
