The Jerusalem municipality has spent about 100 million shekels over the last 5 years on building and maintaining religious buildings, but all of the money has been allocated for orthodox synagogues. The Hiddush NGO for religious freedom and equality claims no funds have been allocated for Christian and Muslim communities or liberal strands of Judaism. As the 125th Anniversary of the First Zionist Congress in Basel was being marked this week another pioneering body also came to Switzerland to address a more contemporary challenge for the Jewish people and the globe. The Keren Kayemet L’israel, known in English as the Jewish National Fund, got its start at the 5th Zionist Congress 120 years ago. Now it opened the main Anniversary highlighting the fight against the Climate Crisis and global warming. A former and the last leader of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev has passed away at the age of 91 after a long illness. It was during his rule that the gates of the Iron Curtain began to open and large numbers of Soviet Jews immigrated to Israel. As we mark 125 years of the birth of the Zionist movement, Israel has become a vital and dynamic homeland for the Jewish people. Prof. Yossi Shain, a Knesset member from the Israel Beitenu Party, says that the Zionist revolution changed history and has made Israel the center of the Jewish people but that Zionism is a never ending process. A former head of the school of government and international affairs at Tel Aviv University and professor emeritus of international affairs at Georgetown University, Shain says that a schism has opened between Israel and liberal Jews, mainly in the United States. Against the backdrop of the teachers' threat to strike the new school year unless the government improves their wages and work conditions, a new report by the Shoresh Institution for Socioeconomic Research has found that Israeli teachers earn more, comparatively, than counterparts in OECD countries. While the average monthly salary of Israeli teachers is low compared to the average OECD teacher's monthly salary, when adjusted for teaching hours and national living standards, Israeli teachers receive up to 23 percent higher wages than the OECD average. According to the report, these findings underscore a need to rethink more broadly how Israel chooses, trains and compensates its teachers. A new report from IMPACT-se , analyzing  textbooks in the Iranian curriculum, indicates a greater degree of radicalization than in previous reports.Findings show that the Islamic Republic’s curriculum provides educational content that continues to teach students about the prospect of a global war to spread the Islamist-Khomeinist revolution from as early as the first grade. Highway 16, a multi-billion shekel new road that cuts through four tunnels, seven bridges and three interchanges to bring a new entrance to the city of Jerusalem opens next week. While built ahead of schedule - one benefit of the COVID pandemic - the new road is expected to ease congestion into the capital.
