Sinopsis
Against the backdrop of the teachers' threat to strike the new school year unless the government improves their wages and work conditions, a new report by the Shoresh Institution for Socioeconomic Research has found that Israeli teachers earn more, comparatively, than counterparts in OECD countries. While the average monthly salary of Israeli teachers is low compared to the average OECD teacher's monthly salary, when adjusted for teaching hours and national living standards, Israeli teachers receive up to 23 percent higher wages than the OECD average. According to the report, these findings underscore a need to rethink more broadly how Israel chooses, trains and compensates its teachers. Prof. Dan Ben-David, President of the Shoresh Institution and an economist at Tel Aviv University, spoke to KAN reporter Naomi Segal about the study. (Photo: First day of school, 2017.
