  • Turkey's election heads for run-off

    15/05/2023 Duración: 04min

Turkey is heading  for a run-off vote after President Tayyip Erdogan led over his opposition rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu in Sunday's election but fell short of an outright majority to extend his 20-year rule of the NATO-member country. Neither Erdogan nor Kilicdaroglu cleared the 50% threshold needed to avoid a second round, to be held on May 28, in an election seen as a verdict on Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian path. KAN's Mark Weiss asked Dr Gabi Mitchell, a Policy Fellow at the Mitvim Institute, if Erdogan was the big winner from Sunday’s vote.(Photo:Reuters)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The government has approved apportioning an overall sum of NIS 13.6 billion ($ 3.72 billion) in coalition funds in 2023-2024. According to the proposal, the state budget for 2023 will include a dedicated sum of NIS 5.7 billion, as well as a dedicated sum of NIS 7.9 billion in 2024.    The final decision regarding coalition funds was met with opposition by Finance Ministry officials, who warned that the coalition funds were liable to damage Haredi contribution to the workforce, lead to future tax hikes and adversely affect the GDP and growth. • EU cancels Europe Day reception with Minister Ben-Gvir

    08/05/2023 Duración: 06min

The European Union has  canceled Tuesday’s planned Europe Day reception  in Tel Aviv in order to prevent  national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, from participating and speaking during the event.  "Regrettably, this year we have decided to cancel the diplomatic reception, as we do not want to offer a platform to someone whose views contradict the values the EU stands for," the EU said in a statement. Minister  Ben-Gvir, head of the Otzma Yehudit  party responded angrily.  "It is a shame that the European Union, which claims to represent the values of democracy and multiculturalism, practices undiplomatic silencing,” he said.  KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Maya Sion Tzedkiyahu, Director of the Program on Israel- Europe Relations program at the Mitvim Institute for Regional Foreign Policies. • Taibe murders amplify calls on government to address crime and violence

    01/05/2023 Duración: 10min

The murder of a young mother and her two infant sons in Taibe brought the number of deaths by crime and violence in the Arab community since the start of the year to 64 – compared to 25 for the same period last year, a stark statistic for a national security minister who campaigned on a pledge of restoring governance and personal security. Dr. Thabet Abu Rass, co-executive director of the Abraham Initiatives, says that the recent tragedy must serve as a wake-up call, especially  for the Israeli government and police. He told KAN's Naomi Segal that the national security minister – and the current Israeli government in general – halted plans and programs put in place by the previous government to build trust and address the deeper causes of crime and violence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
