Municipal elections are taking place across the country this Tuesday. It’s a national holiday and a great excuse to get out into nature and enjoy some of Israel’s natural beauty, particularly now as flowers begin to bloom. Keren Kayemet Le’Israel, the Jewish National Fund, has readied its forests for visitors. The exhibition "With New Eyes: Landscape Architects Paint and Photograph an Israeli Landscape" opens at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque on March 4th. As its title suggests, the works in the exhibition give artistic expression to the contributors' personal connection to the local landscape and its spaces. The impact of the October 7th war on the Israeli landscape is also reflected in some of the works in the exhibition,  which is curated by  Ayelet Amorai-Biran. The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel has  issued a report, the first of its kind, about the findings that have been collected regarding acts of sexual assault that were committed on October 7 and on captives in Hamas captivity. According to the report, the sex crimes were committed in four separate venues—at the Nova festival, in civilian communities, on IDF bases and in the Gaza Strip. The information points to systematic group attacks on women and men, which were often committed in front of the victims’ family members and friends. Some of the victims were murdered while being raped or a short time afterwards. As the Israel-Hamas war continues, antisemitism has been rising in Europe. Is there a difference between the nature of antisemitism before October 7th and after? How do Israelis experience antisemitism, and how to identify and combat it? This is the focus of the research and a book written by educational consultant Anita Haviv-Horiner, "Nothing New in Europe? Israelis Look at Antisemitism Today." She will be giving an online lecture on the subject entitled "What's New in Europe" on February 22 at 5 p.m. through the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem. Since the start of the war, some 200 doctors and paramedics have come from abroad to volunteer with Magen David Adom. After undergoing an orientation through Magen David Adom's international unit to learn the rescue service's protocols, the medical professionals join the Magen David Adom teams for shifts on ambulances and mobile intensive care units. Among those who came to volunteer with Magen David Adom is Dr. Marc Wilkenfeld, through the initiative IL-USDocAid, which provides assistance to the Israeli health system, including Magen David Adom, as it faces challenges due to the significant increase in casualties and a shortage of doctors,  exacerbated by the deployment of medical professionals to the IDF reserves during the ongoing war. The full board of Democrats Abroad Israel has resigned from leadership positions in the international umbrella organization due to what they termed  "the hostile environment in Democrats Abroad against Jews in general and American Jews living in Israel in particular." The battles with Hamas and Hizbullah have left scorched earth behind them and caused fires in several nature reserves in the south, and on the border with Lebanon. The movement of heavy military vehicles, plowing new roads and staging areas, has destroyed some of the landscape. Waste left behind by soldiers has created pollution and stray dogs slipping in from the Gaza Strip have created a dangerous health hazard. The environmental damage, while not disastrous, is in some cases irreparable. The Nature and Parks Authority has been working with the military and other bodies to coordinate their actions on the ground.
