Overcoming Power- Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection was the opening of a door into the possibilities of walking into something the Father has prepared for us! God has prepared – through Jesus – a different life and inheritance for us. Just like the spies in Numbers 13, we have to see the inheritance and the different life or we will never know that there is a different way to live. When we see that God has a different life for us we still have to take possession of it and the promises He has for us. God requires a response to His direction to complete the overall process. The process of possession is in cooperation with God not independent of Him. To take possession we will have to overcome opposition. Some people see opposition, while some people see opportunity. Some people see problems while some people see possibilities. Caleb in Numbers 13 saw what everyone else saw, BUT he SAID something different than what everyone else said. Caleb’s words were not a REACTION to a circumstance around him but rather a REFLECTION of the belief that was within him! An Overcoming Spirit speaks from REVELATION not from OBSERVATION. An Overcoming Spirit in the face of adversity allows us to: see THROUGH the spirit, believe IN the spirit, speak FROM the spirit, and FOLLOWS GOD FULLY. If you truly want to possess everything God has for you - you must follow Him fully. Who is your leader? Who you are following determines where you're going to go. If you follow Jesus, He's going to bring you life and life more abundantly. Jesus said - "If anyone desires to come after me - let him DENY HIMSELF, and TAKE UP YOUR CROSS, and FOLLOW ME." When the Israelites went to spy out the land – Numbers 13 – they were told to find out if the people there were strong or weak, if they dwelt in camps or strongholds, and check if the land was rich or poor. God never lied to them about who was inhabiting the land instead He said, “Be of good courage!” It was true that they could overcome the land and possess it – as God had already commanded – but the strength of the people, the citied they dwelt in, and the fruitful land was also true. They saw the fruitfulness of the land but were afraid of the people that dwelt there. What they believed about possessing the land was overcome by what they saw in the land. When we face adversity, we can respond in one of two ways, we can choose to be overwhelmed, or we can choose to overcome. To overcome we need courage! Courage means, to venture, withstand or persevere through danger, fear or difficulty. Courage is there but we’ve got to call upon and take hold of it. In the absence of danger, fear, and difficulty courage cannot exist. There is no need for courage without difficult circumstances to persevere through. When we are facing difficulties and circumstances that we have never seen before we are being set up for deliverance that we have never seen or experienced before! I can punch my Bible time with Jesus real easy, but if we're just doing it in the form and function of it, then we're in a real good religion. Religion is form without power, and what I need, what the world needs - is the power from heaven so I can impact the world. Spending time in the presence with God takes the things I value and I attain to be and produces a core value in me that actually matches the high value of heaven. How are we going to experience everything God has for us? By faith! My faith doesn’t tell God what to do, it connects me to receive what He has already done. The manager at a grocery store doesn’t walk beside you and put the things you need in your cart. They have already made it available on the shelves and you have to put it in your cart. There might be things on the shelf that you choose not to get but that doesn’t mean they weren’t available. When we come to God He makes everything He has available but we have the choice by faith to determine what we pick up or receive. Pray believing! Praying believing is not making things available to us that were not already there or persuading God to give us something. He has already made His promises available to us, all we have to do is receive them. When we pray it should first come from a place of faith from believing - firmly persuaded, believe to the extent of complete trust or reliance on – we often pray from the place of wanting but we often stop short of the position of believing. The only thing that will produce that kind of faith is the word of God. Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Sow – hear - God’s word in your heart until you come to a place of believing. How often should we pray? Luke 18:1 “…men always ought to pray and not lose heart,” Pray always! It doesn’t mean praying all the time but praying on every occasion no matter how small. How long should we pray? The widow in Luke 18 continually came to the unjust judge until her goal - justice - was accomplished. Her request was not attached to a time frame, but it was attached to a goal. Our Heavenly Father treats us differently than the unjust judge - v. 6 -because He loves us. Keep continually coming to the Father in prayer! In order for God to pour new things into our lives, we have to remain soft and flexible to expand our capacity. Is it possible that fasting keeps us soft and flexible for the new things God wants to pour into our lives? Matthew 9:17 says, “Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Without keeping our hearts soft and flexible, we can’t contain the things God wants to pour into our lives. Prayer and fasting is about breakthrough spiritually that could not otherwise. Jesus said prayer and fasting is necessary to get breakthrough in certain areas. Because of Christ we can come to Him boldly and confidently in our prayer and fasting. It is when we understand our identity in Christ and our rights as heirs of God, we can come boldly to His throne and pray persistently and believing. The secret sauce of anything is that essential ingredient that makes something or someone successful. So what's the Secret Sauce of Christianity? Two main ingredients are prayer and fasting. What are you catching for Christmas? God gave the gift of peace and goodwill TOWARD us, and it's up to us to catch it. If you're going to catch what God is tossing your way, you have to drop something in order to catch it. If you want to catch His peace - you've got to drop anxiety. You can't hold onto worry, stress and anxiety about a situation and catch peace in that same situation. We try to catch both of them, but we can't. God wants more for your life, but you've got to let go of what you're holding onto. Drop the things not from God and receive in your heart the implanted Word of God. Get into it and around it. Have you ever been in something you wish you could get out of? Sometimes the way IN is your way OUT. Maybe what you're going through, an employment situation or a relationship situation. Paul talks in Romans 1 about finding a way "in" the will of God. Sometimes we want to get out of His will because of a lack of trust that His way is going to work for us. Does God have a will? Is His will for the world and our individual lives completely in His control, or is some of it dependent on us? God has a will that everyone be saved, but does He always get His way? God isn't willing that any should perish, but many are. How can many be perishing if that's not God's will? Where there's will of God, there's a way of God. Where there's a will of man, there's a way of man. God's way - Jesus - has to be found, and that's partly dependent on us.
