On today’s episode we’ll be discussing two movies over the span of two episodes. First up is a movie on my shame list that was recommended to me back on our Dark City episode, Tarsem Singh’s THE CELL. THE CELL is a twisted serial killer film that’s part Police procedural and part fantastical, sci-fi inspired acid trip. It’s definitely an odd combination, but comes together is an oddly satisfying way. The film is about Dr. Catherine Deane who helps treat Coma patients with an experimental virtual reality machine that allows her to go into the dreams of her patients to help communicate with them. While all this is going on, FBI agents Peter Novak and Gordon Ramsey are hot on the tails of a serial killer that has a fascination with turning his female victims into dolls. The FBI are finally able to catch the killer, but a rare disease causes him to fall into a coma… so the FBI must get Dr. Deane to help find where a missing girl is held by going into the dark and twisted dreams of a serial killer. On today’s episode of the Shamelist Picture Show Michael and his wife Amanda will be discussing one of two classic 80s dance movies that have been on my shamelist forever… DIRTY DANCING Directed by Emile Ardolino in 1987 from a script by Linda Gottlieb, DIRTY DANCING tells the story of 17-year old “Baby” Houseman who is vacationing with her family at Kellerman’s resort in the Catskill Mountains. Baby is young, idealistic and has humanitarian dreams to help her common man. While at the resort, Baby meets Johnny, a young dancer that all the women on the resort are obsessed with. While loved, Johnny is often the butt of everyone’s insults and despite being the most popular act at the resort, is put down for his poor life outside of the resort. After a twist of fate, Johnny’s normal dance partner, Penny, can’t join him for a very important dance so Johnny attempts to teach Baby how to fill in for her. On Today’s episode we’ll be discussing Steven Spielberg’s first feature film, the made-for-TV movie DUEL. Produced in 1971 for ABC’s Movie of the Week, DUEL tells the harrowing tale of a drive through the desert gone awry. David Mann is a middle-aged, meek salesman on his way to handle some business. His leisure drive becomes stressful once he finds himself behind a larger tanker truck. Not wanting to be late, Mann passes the truck and thus begins a cat-and-mouse tale that pits man versus machine. It begins harmless with Mann and the truck casually (and not so casually) passing each other, but as Mann’s stress rises, so do the stakes. The truck is obviously not going to let these indiscretions go, and the film becomes a high speed thriller about one persons will to survive a truck that wants him off the road.
