LWAF stands for Long Winded as F#@%. Because when we get together we have a lot to talk about. The podcast is Nick and Joe, longtime friends and lifelong film fans, clear out their Netflix queues and discuss what they've watched. There are so many films on Netflix and we decided to give ourselves a reason to watch them and get together to discuss them. We hope you enjoy the talks and the show.

  • Episode 057 Don't Think Twice (2016) & The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)

    This week we discuss the Mike Birbiglia film Don't Think Twice (2016) and the Derek Cianfrance film The Place Beyond The Pines (2012). Don't Think Twice is a film about an improv group that is struggling to break through when one of their members makes the big time. As a result the relationships within the group begin to deteriorate immediately. The Place Beyond The Pines is a film about a man that when faced with life changing information decides to go for a quick fix and starts robbing banks. That decision ends up having long lasting consequences for everyone involved. Next we have a new segment called Highest and Lowest where we throw out a celebrity name and then we have to guess their highest and lowest rated films on MetaCritic. Lastly we select our films for next week and we go with a couple detective comedies currently on Netflix with Handsome and Mindhorn.

    This week we switched things up. We had planned a discussion of Don't Think Twice and The Place Beyond The Pines but in honor of the 4th of July holiday we decided to discuss the Netflix Original documentary Five Came Back (2017). A fascinating documentary about five of the most iconic film directors of all time John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens, Frank Capra and William Wyler and their experience when they signed up to go to World War II and make documentaries for the US government. Five Came Back also delves into the directors personal lives and how their work was affected by their experiences in the war. Featuring Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Greengrass, Lawrence Kasdan and Guillermo Del Toro the documentary is an impressive collection of historical footage and is crafted with a beautiful style. The three part documentary manages to be both informative and enjoyable to watch. Next as a special segment we discuss the 10 directors in Five Came Back and our favorite films of theirs. Nick

  • Episode 55 Christine (2016) & Manglehorn (2014)

    This week we have two very intense dramas. First we discuss the Al Pacino, Holly Hunter and Chris Messina film Manglehorn (2014) . Directed by David Gordon Green Manglehorn is a film about an aging misanthrope that yearns for a lost love from his past. Then we discuss the film Christine (2016) starring Rebecca Hall and Michael C. Hall. The film is based on a true story of a small town reporter that struggles with mental illness and the rapidly changing news business. She ultimately committed suicide live on air.  Next we unveil a new segment called What Ever Happened To? Nick and Joe discuss character actors that have fallen out of the limelight and what they have been up to more recently. This week we discuss Lauren Holly and William Atherton.   • Episode 054 Win It All (2017) & Dope (2015)

    First we discuss the Joe Swanberg film starring Jake Johnson, Win It All (2017). A story about a degenerate gambler that gets in over his head and has to turn his life around. Then we discuss the Rick Famuyiwa film Dope (2015). About three nerds growing up in south central and when they get caught up in a drug deal, they have to figure out how to get out of the trouble circling around them. Next we have our Against the Grain segment where we discuss films where our opinion of goes against popular opinion. First Nick thinks that Cedar Rapids is more entertaining than the audience Tomatometer suggests. Then Joe tells the world why they are wrong about Never Ending Story. We are off next week but we select two films for our next episode. Nick picks the Al Pacino film Manglehorn and Joe selects the Rebecca Hall film from 2016 Christine.

  • EPISODE 53 TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016) & THE JUNGLE BOOK (2016)

    After a week off we dive back in. First up was a suggestion from a listener and friend @editvideofaster with the film Train To Busan (2016). A Korean horror film about a train over run by a zombie horde. Then we discuss the huge blockbuster remake The Jungle Book (2016) directed by Jon Favreau. Both films are innovative and very well made. Next we have our Big Boys Don't Cry segment where Joe and Nick discuss films that have made them cry. First up Nick discusses the Scarlett Johansson & Bill Murray film Lost in Translation. Then Joe discusses the latest entry in a long running film saga with Ryan Coogler's Creed. Then we select our films for next week!

  • Episode 52 A Gentleman's Agreement (1947) & A Single Man (2009)

    This week we discuss two very different films with unforeseen parallels. First we discuss A Gentleman's Agreement (1947) starring Gregory Peck and directed by Elia Kazan. Then we discuss the first film from designer and director Tom Ford A Single Man (2009). Starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Nicholas Hoult the film is a very stylized look at a gay man in the 1950's struggling to get past the sudden death of his partner. Then we have a segment we call Hidden Gems. Where we suggest films we think need more recognition. This week Joe has a WWII film called Europa Europa and Nick discusses a film called My Man Godfrey. We will be off for Memorial Day weekend but we pick two films for our next episode in early June.

  • Episode 51 Imperial Dreams (2014) & Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

    This week we discuss the Netflix original Imperial Dreams (2014) starring John Boyega as a ex-convict recently released from prison and trying to escape the pit falls of his old life. Then we have the Cold War thriller Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) a complex but engrossing thriller with a stellar cast and an endlessly unfolding plot. Next we have our longest running segment called Hidden Gems where we discuss two films we think haven't been seen enough. Since it has some parallels to one of this week's films Joe would like you to check out Fruitvale Station (2013) and Nick ties in the film Frankie and Johnny (1991) through one of the actors in Imperial Dreams.   • Episode 050 The Dark Knight (2008) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

    For our 50th episode Joe and Nick have a jammed packed show. First up is our long awaited discussion of The Dark Knight (2008). Joe loves the film and Nick hates it, finally we discuss why. Then for this special episode we discuss Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 fresh from the opening day screening. 
 Next we debut a new segment Impression Roulette. In this special segment we break out our absolute best impressions and Nick and Joe pair these voices with iconic movie lines and see if their co-host can guess the voice and the film. For example you might hear Kermit the Frog doing a line from Pulp Fiction. Tune in and play along!

  • Episode 049 Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) & The Little Prince (2015)

    We have two animated films on tap this week. First we discuss Kubo and the Two Strings (2016), an impressive and imaginative film about a boy and his complicated family dynamics. Then we discuss the Netflix original The Little Prince (2015). Directed by Mark Osborne, one of the directors of the original Kung Fu Panda, this film is based on the esoteric and philosophical children's book The Little Prince. Then we introduce a new segment Pet Peeves where we discuss cinematic annoyances and over used clichés. Nick gets annoyed by unrealistic phone conversations and it really gets Joe's dander up when characters say things like, "Hey you remember when we were kids…". Then we discuss the long awaited 50th episode where we will finally square off on The Dark Knight. One of Joe's favorite films and one that Nick really doesn't like.   • Episode 48 The Impossible (2012) & The Wave (2015)

    This week our films are similar, they both deal with the devastation of tsunamis. The first film is The Impossible (2012) about the 2004 disaster in South East Asia. The film follows the true story of one families fight to find each other after the massive disaster. Our second film is The Wave (2015) the story of the potential scenario if the narrow Norwegian fjord Geiranger collapsed and created a massive tsunami engulfing a small village. While both films show the extent of the devastation they focus on individual families journey through the disasters. Next we have a disaster themed Take My Money. Nick and Joe suggest two potential stories that could make interesting real life disaster films. Nick would like to see an event series around the Bubonic plague. While Joe thinks the Port Chicago munitions disaster would make a compelling film.     This week we discuss two films that take place at war time but otherwise are complete opposites. Nick chose the documentary Korengal (2014) which was the follow up to the Oscar nominated documentary Restrepo (2010). Joe went with the Hollywood classic The African Queen (1951) starring the endlessly charismatic Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.    Next we play everyone's favorite quiz show I'm Right You're Wrong!   • Episode 46 The Battered Bastards of Baseball (2014) & Fastball (2016)

    This week in honor of the start of baseball season we review two baseball themed documentaries. First up is the documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball (2014) about an independent minor league team in the late 70's owned and operated by Bing Russel father of Hollywood legend Kurt Russel. Next we discuss the documentary Fastball (2016) about the magic of the most famous pitch in baseball. Next we discuss our top 3 baseball movies. Where we obviously agree on the brilliance of Major League but there are some disagreements as well. Then, as always, we pick our films for next week.   • Episode 45 Atonement (2007)

    This week with scheduled vacations for each of us we recorded a one movie episode as we discuss Atonement (2007) starring Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Saoirse Ronan and Benedict Cumberbatch. Based on a beloved book and set in the back drop of World War II the story is about an imaginative young writer Briony Tallis, who accuses her sisters lover of a crime that he did not commit. Because of this lie all of the characters lives are changed forever.  Next we have our Against the Grain segment where we talk about films that we believe the opposite of public opinion. Joe talks about The English Patient and Nick discusses My Cousin Vinny and the performance of Marissa Tomei. We will be taking a one week break but we do select two new films for our first show back. We will be talking about a couple baseball documentaries The Battered Bastards of Baseball and Fastball in anticipation of the start of the 2017 baseball season.     This week commemorates one year of podcasting for us. Yay us! As we pick our films our tastes continue to reveal themselves. Nick chooses Compulsion (1959) starring Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles about the true crime Leopold and Loeb murder trial. Joe selects Short Term 12 (2013) starring Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr., about a care facility for troubled youth.   Next we have our Big Boy's Don't Cry segment. Where Nick and Joe aren't afraid to admit the movies that have made us cry. Nick got misty with Rudy.   • Episode 43 The Trip (2010) & Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001)

    In honor of Nick's trip to Europe we are doing a couple of road trip films. First up, Nick chose The Trip (2010) starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. The two comedians play fictionalized versions of themselves as they go on a road trip of restaurants through small towns in England. Next Joe picked Y Tu Mama Tambien (2002) about two teenage boys that go on a road trip with an older woman and explore their sexuality and learn a lot about life and themselves. Next to stay with the theme we discuss our top 3 road trip films. Joe's three films were narrowed to focus on comedy road trip films. Nick had some tough cuts to his top three but luckily we also had a handful of honorable mentions to talk about.     Episode 42  An Unmarried Woman (1978) & Sing Street (2016) Welcome to the newly re-formatted LWAF podcast! Same charming and handsome fellas, same sexy streaming service, but now with added "freedom of choice"! The boys get to choose the movies we watch and we aren't wasting any time. Nick selected the 1978 Academy Award nominated film An Unmarried Woman. This Paul Mazursky film is about a middle aged Manhattanite who struggles to deal with her  her fresh divorce, her teenage daughter and re-discover her own sexuality. Joe selected the 2016 indie darling Sing Street, about a teenager in Dublin who forms a school band to attract the attentions of a young lady he fancies and while doing so learns what it means to discover himself. Our tried and true closing segment Hidden Gems features the 1976 comedy adventure Silver Streak starring Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor and Jill Clayburgh (streaming on Netflix!) and the 2010 indie drama Blue Valentine with Ryan Gossling and Michelle Williams.     Moving forward we have decided to tweak our format and no linger watch randomly selected films. But this week we review two final films chosen by the randomizer. First we discuss A Drummer's Dream (2010) a documentary about a weekend drumming camp where professional drummers mentor and teach kids. Then we discuss Boy Meets Girl (2015) a film about a transgender barista in Kentucky that dreams of moving to New York to be a fashion designer. Next we have our Take My Money segment where we discuss films we would love to see Hollywood make. Joe want's to see a film based on the Loyola Marymount March Madness run of 1990 and Nick would like to see the story of Andrew Zimmern adapted to film. Lastly we introduce our new format and tell you what you can expect in the future and what two films we'll be discussing next week!     This week we selected two films currently on Netflix where the story was about love or relationships. The first film is an independent coming-of-age story called The Young Kieslowski (2014). The story centers on two college students that are faced with a difficult decision after a drunken one night stand. Our second film is the classic tale of Jane Eyre (2011) directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell and Judi Dench. Next we have a Hidden Gems segment where we stick with the romance theme and suggest two films that you might want to sit back and enjoy on Valentines Day with your loved one. Then we set up next week's show which is our Oscar preview show. We'll discuss 13th (2016) the Netflix original documentary directed by Ava DuVernay. Virunga (2014) follows a group of park rangers that protect the Virunga national forest  in the Congo as a civil war breaks out. Next we discuss a drama set in the high end art world, The Best Offer (2014). From the director of "Cinema Paradisio" and starring Geoffrey Rush the film follows a cantankerous auctioneer as he takes a job from a reclusive heiress. Next we have our tried and true Hidden Gems segment. Joe suggest a documentary that thematically fits in perfect with our movies this week while Nick has a classic animated film from Italy. Then we head to our randomizer to see what is in store for next week.
