It's an immersive, cinematic journey through modern Aotearoa, and I'm very happy to have Anthonie Tonnon on the phone from Whanganui to talk about it.

Maggie Tweedie reviews Throwing Muses new album Moonlight Concessions. The nine new songs from Moonlight are an effervescent addition to the band's varied and eclectic catalogue, showcasing a more optimistic and luminous sound than ever before.

Shakaiah Perez aka Lady Shaka is a queer DJ hailing from Aotearoa, known for her eclectic, vibrant, and diverse sets that reflects her mixed Maori, Tahitian, Cape Verdean, Tokelauan, and Samoan heritage. Since 2018, she's been carving out her own unique space in the global scene, living in London and establishing herself as a Pacific club queen, indigenising dance floors. In 2023, she was awarded the Creative New Zealand Award for her ground-breaking work in shaping contemporary music that transcends traditional genres within the Pacific Islander community. On top of her DJing prowess, she's also a talented dancer, having honed her skills as a former member of Parris Goebel's Royal Family dance group - a talent she brings to life in her Boiler Room sets around the world.

Sly Stone, a true musical innovator, is often overlooked as one of the greatest artists of the 21st century. Without Sly Stone, there would be no Prince and no Parliament Funkadelic- he is an undeniable testament to his influence on the music world. This legacy is at the heart of a new film titled Sly Lives! aka The Burden of Black Genius, directed by Questlove and produced by Joseph Patel and currently streaming on Disney+. Maggie Tweedie spoke to Patel about Sly Stone's legacy.

Nitin Sawhney is a musician, composer, and producer known for fusing jazz, electronic, orchestral and Indian classical music. Born in 1964 in London to Indian immigrant parents, his work is deeply influenced by his multicultural upbringing. Despite his success, Sawhney has remained politically engaged, using his platform to discuss issues such as immigration, racism, and global conflict. His work often reflects his personal experiences growing up in a racially tense Britain, which shaped his perspective and artistic expression. Nitin has released over a dozen solo albums and has collaborated with artists like Paul McCartney, Sting, Jeff Beck, Anoushka Shankar, and Norah Jones. Nitin Sawhney speaks to Music 101 ahead of his slot at WOMAD.

Mokotron is a Ngati Hine music producer based in Tamaki Auckland, who is part of a Maori electronic music scene that has become a creative force. The man behind Mokotron is Tiopira McDowell - by day a lecturer in Maori Studies, and co-head of the Maori and Pacific Studies at Auckland Uni, and by night, an artist who has gained a reputation for getting the clubs heaving with a sound that's distinctly Aotearoa.
