When The Storm Becomes The Norm - Isaac Borquaye - HTB at Home by HTB Church

‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.’(Psalm 34:18) 2021 might not have delivered the fresh new start that many of us had hoped for, but we can walk through this year knowing that we never go through our struggles alone. Katherine Chow encouraged us with the truth that Jesus sees us, weeps with us and longs to draw close to us. When we feel crushed, alone or lost, we can look to the redeeming power of the Cross – a dark moment used by God to accomplish His good purposes. As He did then, so too with us – the Lord will bring about something beautiful as we fight our battles with Him.

‘The weight of the world rests on the powerful and humble shoulders of Jesus.’ Life might feel overwhelming and chaotic in these challenging times. Drawing on the words of the prophet Isaiah and the Parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:4-5), Ben Bryant encourages us to lay our burdens on the shoulders of Jesus – He is strong enough to carry the weight of our world.

For many of us, lockdown and the continuing global pandemic have been a catalyst for reflection on what’s most important to us. How can a baby born 2000 years ago, 2000 miles away be good news for us today? How might it bring joy in our lives right now? We can be unhappy about how things are going on in our lives but still experience joy, a lightness, a confidence, a peace and a gratitude in the midst of those challenges. How is this possible? Stephen Foster shares his experience.

Do you think of your ‘glory days’ as a distant memory? CEO of the Church Revitalisation Trust and HTB curate Sarah Jackson delves into the Book of Isaiah to encourage us to find courage in crisis: God’s glory days are not over, and His power is at work in our world today. ‘But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.’ (Isaiah 40: 31)

Do you feel like you’re walking in the wilderness? HTB curate Rachael Wooldridge reminds us of Jesus’s own experience in the wilderness. In the midst of trials and temptation, He remembered God’s word – in times of pain and confusion, may we learn to depend more deeply on the Lord, confident of God's steadfast love. ‘For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (Romans 8:38-39)

Do you feel lost in the desert? In today’s HTB Bitesize, Sarah Jackson shares from Ezekiel 47. Here Ezekiel witnesses water flowing from the temple – the same living water that Jesus offers us through His Holy Spirit. Sarah encourages us to invite His living water to flood our lives today, and to fill us with His hope and love.

Have you ever felt overlooked by someone you respect? In today’s HTB Bitesize, Nicky Lee speaks on the extraordinary promise of James 4:8. God doesn’t have more important things to attend to, or more interesting people to speak with – He simply loves to be with us, and is waiting for us to come near to Him. ‘Come near to God and he will come near to you.’ (James 4:8)

The Christmas story is about God’s love in action.
