This week, Paul’s been doing almost nothing but work on stuff so due to his incompetence The Media Monks welcome back guest Eno Metzo of The Awful Gamer to banter and keep things going… to successful and failed outcomes. Nathan, disappointed still with The Avengers decides to hit up X-Men: First Class to see how well that holds up with his new realization of not liking most comic book movies. Eno reveals his love of Army of Darkness and suggests everyone watch Machete Maidens Unleashed while Paul laments at how little there is on the Canadian Netflix. Also, Duke Nukem Forever is no longer $2.99 at Best Buy which leaves Nathan disappointed.

Earlier in this week, our Avengers/Indie Game: The Movie podcast was released so we’re sure to steer away from that here. Instead, Paul’s been watching some more 2 Broke Girls, Community and The Legend of Korra. We discuss some Walking Dead Episode 1: A New Day game by Telltale and Nathan brings up some ghosts from the past by watching The Talented Mr. Ripley.  Also, Bad Santa is pretty good. Just to make sure we don’t have too good a time, Nathan reminds us that Bernie Mac is dead along with the recently deceased Adam Yauch (MCA) of the Beastie Boys.

***SPOILER ALERT!*** We get heavy into major spoilers for Cabin in the Woods and recommend if you haven’t seen it to skip 00:56:20 to 01:04:20. You have been warned! Despite some rocky moments (which Paul elaborates on in detail), the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo 2012 Edition was a rollicking success, so sit back and here some tales pertaining to Star Trek, Undergrads, Futurama and, best of all, Ponies!I’m hereby declaring Calgary Canada’s Brony Capital. The lines, the panels, the autographs, all of it is discussed in exhaustive detail. In addition, what films and games were consumed are discussed including James Cameron’s Titanic (in 3D!),Lockout,  The Cabin in the Woods (watch out for spoilers on that one), Fez, Lone Survivor (which both of us played) and The Walking Dead, though more on that one later as Paul has yet to delve into it.

Nathan’s back with stories from his road trip to Coachella and we talk about the finer points of music, road trips and of course bringing the dead back to life. April 20th (or “4/20”) happened which sparks some conversation about marijuana, Hitler and that stupid KONY2012 “Cover The Night” campaign… all while we show how ignorant we are of the *ahem* “holiday’s” origin. Paul neglects watching Game Of Thrones yet again and instead throws in The Devil Wears Prada and makes him call into question any real worth to Anne Hathaway besides when she exposes her chest… and speaking of chests, he continues to watch 2 Broke Girls simply to creep over Kat Dennings. Being the scholar that he is, Nathan instead waxes poetic about more Herzog with Into The Abyss and shares Paul’s passion over the latest episode of Community while berating the United States for their lack of recycling. Oh, also a dog being set on fire and dying prompts Paul to seek a lifestyle change with the Calgary Humane Society.

In Nathan’s absence this week, I’ve asked three friends to join me on discussing some things. All three friends, besides being fortunate awesome enough to know me, are video content producers of varying stages on Youtube. First is David Selig (aka “HebrewLantern”), a new start in the world of Let’s Play videos with little over a month in experience. Next is co-founder of The Awful Gamer and subsequent TAGnation community Eno Metzo and last but certainly not least, the infamous Proton Jon who has been doing videos for way too long. The guys get into some discussion about their varying degrees of successes and complaints while making sure to simultaneously make each other uncomfortable and laugh a lot. Sit back, grab a drink and try to keep up… I know I barely could.

Some technical issues this week. About an hour in Paul’s connection completely dropped out and there was a good hour-and-a-half of time between the initial recording and the ending. This week, Nathan is leaving for a couple of days to drive down to the United States of America for some small thing called Coachella or something to listen to some rap music. We get talking a bit about some of the bands we’d like to see at Coachella and come to the conclusion that we would see completely different things were we both there. Odd Future gets some follow-up with Paul, who still doesn’t like it and we talk a bit about Damon Albarn basically saying that Gorillaz and Blur are over, much to our despair. Nathan watched a rather entertaining Assault on Precinct 13 type Indonesian film called The Raid: Redemption and praises the good times he had watching television series episodes that Paul needs to catch up on. It’s been 6 long months and in that time Paul and Nathan have changed a lot. Let’s be honest; while movies and television are fantastic subject matter for discussion, they’re not the only interests to talk about! Although movies and television will always be at the forefront, there are times when more pressing matters are burning in our minds and thus the show will from here on out be known as the MEDIA Monks. Our inaugural episode in a new shell finds Paul and Nathan discussing the finer points of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Mass Effect 3 and KONY 2012.

Full transparency, posting this a few days after its recording. Life just got kind of busy, you know? This week Paul and Nathan talk about “The Beatles” for a good long while,Newsradio, The Blues Brothers and Werner Herzog’s latest, Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Mutant crocodiles, absurd conspiracies (another involving that amazing Nic Cage photo) and affable banter abound! And the theme this week is the entrance music from “Pac Man Championship Edition DX”. No idea who the amazing individual that made it is as the only credit I have is “NAMCO SOUNDS”

Hey hey, not going to lie, posting this kind of late so this may not be all that informative. Paul largely watched television this week, so we chat about Louie season 2 and the recent happenings in South Park, Colorado. Then Nathan tackles films old and new, including Contagion, the very stylish (but oh so empty) Drive, Mysterious Skin (which earns its NC-17) and the first documentary ever, Nanook of the North. So club a seal, snack on its innards and listen to another hour of movie chatter with Paul and Nathan. NOTE: DO NOT ACTUALLY KILL A SEAL. THEY MAY LOOK SILLY BUT THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO LIVE. UNLESS YOU LIVE IN THE NORTH AND YOU MUST BECAUSE YOU ARE ON THE BRINK OF STARVATION. THEN IT’S TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE. BUT HEY, MAYBE MOVE SOUTH TO A WARMER CLIMATE. IT IS THE 21ST CENTURY AFTERALL.

Welcome to another episode of “The Movie Monks”. This time Paul brought the thunder in regards to movie-watching, breaking down a sizable handful of titles including Kevin Smith’s “Red State” and the Coen Brothers’ “O Brother, Where Art Thou”? Meanwhile, Nathan saw ROTPOTA again (for those counting, six times) and Michael Winterbottom’s “The Trip”, along with a hearty helping of Mega64 and regular television. Then its on to news where the monks discuss David Lynch’s fancy new nightclub, Brett Ratner’s obsession with Eddie Murphy and the pluses and minuses of resurrecting “The X-Files” yet again. That and some completely unrelated tangents involving chocolate rabbits, ice cream and the Penny Arcade Expo. Enjoy! Back to our regularly scheduled podcast we bring you a collection of movie-related chatter and complain about George Lucas’ worsening senility. Paul only saw one single, solitary film this week (Fright Night) but Nathan once again brings the long-winded monologues, this time concerning John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Paul Rudd’s latest (Our Idiot Brother) and many more. In fact, pretty sure he forgot about a film or two he saw this past week but we’ll blame his starvation-induced dementia for that oversight (90 hours, provided you don’t count that banana on day 3). Guess who’s back with a brand new rap? Yes, after 25% of a year worth of hiatus we’re back to talk smack. No news today, just movie and television banter.

Once again this week Paul has only watched tv shows trying to catch up for season finales and left movies by the wayside. Luckily, Nathan spent the week watching a lot of movies that Paul had already seen and has some opinions on so not all is lost. We talk about The Adventures of Tin Tin: The Secret of the Unicorn trailer and Lar Von Trier’s controversial joke-gone-wrong at Cannes.

Nathan is back from his stay-cation and ready to talk some movie business from the past two weeks! Last week the world watched in awe as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took his long awaited position into the Fast and Furious universe in Fast Five, in all his oily glory. Paul and Nathan hit the theater to check out Paul Giamatti’s latest flick “Win-Win” and we talk some about Thor. ***SPOILER WARNING*** We spoil the after-credit ending of Thor almost word for word what happens from 00:28:10 to 00:28:40. You have been warned.

It’s the Easter holiday which means no movies are out that are worth talking about and our unlikely heroes find themselves too busy to watch anything more than television shows (a true task as neither of them have any form of cable!). Paul has spent the majority of his week embarking on more ridiculous self-discovery nonsense with bits of The IT Crowd, old Saturday Night Live sketches and L.A. Ink thrown in to waste some time.  Nathan has spent some time with two movies, a bunch of Star Trek: The Next Generation from the library and the new HBO series Game Of Thrones. Leonard Nimoy will be taking on a voice role in the next Transformers movie, some rumors are put to rest about roles cast in The Dark Knight Rises and Robert Deniro wants to work with Scorsese again. This description feels longer than the actual podcast. Enjoy a short one for once!

Wes Craven is back at it again this week with the newest edition to the Scream franchise after 10 years. Nothing else really worth talking about out in theaters this week as neither of us bothered to see Rio, Nathan has once again overstepped Paul in movies by a huge margin. Nic Cage was arrested and bailed out by Dog the Bounty Hunter and “The Hunger Games” movie adaptation gets a couple more names added to the roster. ****SPOILER WARNING**** We talk somewhat in depth about the end of Scream 4 from 30:00 to 34:50 so if you haven’t seen it, skip to 35 minutes in. You have been warned.

In an attempt to streamline and cut-down on unnecessary banter, we are happy to provide you with a show under two hours for once! This week, Paul has been watching a bunch of documentaries, none of which are any good really or notable and Nathan has been on a kick of The Matrix and Richard Kelly films. We delve into the world of Southland Tales for awhile before moving into spoiler territory for both Source Code and Sucker Punch (see below for spoiler time tags). Some news is going on including a new announcement for Zack Snyder’s Superman movie and the losing of legendary director Sidney Lumet on April 9, 2011.

Things get started same as usual with Nathan watching movies no one has heard of and Paul spending most of the week with random documentaries, but things take a depressing twist later on when Paul describes one of the harder watches of the week. Happy or not, Hobo With A Shotgun happened, Nathan tells of how Sucker Punch might likely be so bad that it will be studied for years while Paul still has hope for Zack Snyder and Community airs an interesting (albeit unfunny) episode that strikes us some thoughtful conversation…kind of.

Technical problems should be at a minimal now, allowing for another Movie Monks release this week! We discuss the return and love of grindhouse cinema with the upcoming release of Hobo With A Shotgun, the dark places Nathan’s run of “Coogan-films” has taken him, the finer points of cat food and profess our love of the tv show Community all in this 2.5 hour discussion!
