We’ve got one more turkey trip up our sleeve to finish off the spring and we also have some new territory to explore as we start to wrap our minds around what deer season prep is going to look like over the summer months!    

Jordan left us in kansas to go on a week-long turkey binge! We catch back up with him this week to see what all he managed to get himself into, and what he learned along the way! 

This podcast episode is way different than any of the one's we've ever done. It's real. It's honest, and I promise it's worth a listen. In hunting scenarios, in global pandemic scenarios, or just in life scenarios we will face hardships. What's important is how we deal with them. 

Turkey hunting in the Midwest is has become one of our favorite trips of the spring. They grow them big in this region of the country and they like to gobble long and often. In this episode, we talk with our friend Tommy Nails, of Whiskey Ridge Hunts, who has been guiding deer and turkey hunts here for over 20 years. We talk about some of the key differences between turkey hunting here as opposed to turkey hunting in the Southeast. We also talk about the hunts we had this week and what we did to end up successful. 

Lake talks with Professor Mike Chamberlain about the potential implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on wild turkey populations, especially in the Southeast. It's no secret that all of us here love turkey hunting. So naturally, we want do our best to ensure the availability of good turkey hunting in the future. 

Every turkey hunter knows what its like to experience a streak of bad luck. Well, we had a whole week of it! In this episode we talk about about a Mishap filled week where we did nothing but get whipped day in and day out! It was entertaining to say the least! Turkey hunting when done correctly, and ethically is one the best and most gratifying pastimes we have the privelege of taking part in. It's a challenging and respectful pursuit that makes us better hunters and better woodsman. It drives us to be better conservationist and stewards of the natural resources we've been given to manage. In this episode we discuss, what we perceive to be, one of the biggest threats to turkey hunting and what we all can do to change that. 

Today's episode is about as live action as it gets. We're talking about a successful hunt that happened this very morning! Every turkey that you get a chance to kill is special, no doubt, but when it's an old long spurred gobbler that you've been after for several seasons, it makes it a little more sweet. That's exactly what we were able to do this morning, and we want to go over the decisions and moves we made that put us in the position to kill him. 

Part of what makes turkey hunting so worthy of our obsession is the extreme highs and extreme lows that it offers. There's no in between. You're either on top of a mountain after a few great hunts, or fighting frustration because you just can't seem to make it all come together. We experience an emotional turkey roller coaster this week, and are luckily still here to tell the tale. We have missed turkeys, spooked turkeys, and finally a few killed turkeys. What's most important, however, is what we can take away from all these hunts (failed hunts included) to make us more successful in the future.

The latter half of our trip to South Florida turned out to be just as productive as the first half! We then headed back west to our home state of Mississippi, just in time for the season opener! In this episode, we talk about some of things we do to find success in the earliest points of the season.

Last Spring Jordan and I had the pleasure of turkey hunting with Dave for a few days in Wisconsin. We finally got to catch back up with him at the 2020 NWTF convention and breakdown that hunt from start to finish. We also dive into great detail about some of the things we noticed that Dave does that play a huge part in his consistent success. Deer season is officially over for us, so we have officially shifted gears towards spring turkey hunting. Deer season is coming to a quick close. With Cottonmouth being shutdown from the high water, we are headed to high ground for one more deer trip. Our hopes are to end the season on a much-needed high note. We also spend time talking about this past deer season as a whole, discussing in detail, everything that made it the hardest season we have ever faced. 

Despite how much we had all hoped for a good river year, once again the mighty Mississippi River is on the rise. So far at Cottonmouth we have pretty much lost all of our property in LA, the MS portion is cutoff unless you use a boat, and we are days away from the season shutting down in Arkansas. We have one afternoon left to hunt before we have to pack up and head to higher ground. Join us as we talk about the daily struggles of high water and also answer some questions sent in by listeners.

Cottonmouth in January tends to be a happening place. This year, however, is a little unorthodox. The Deer movement is at a low, but the ducks are here in high numbers. We talk about hunting plans for the rest of the month. We also dive fully into the subject of trash ducks. Where did this term come from, and why we so strongly disagree with it.
