The objective of the presentation is to identify problems, offer mitigating solutions to hazards, and share specific information essential to minimizing loss of life and maximizing faster rescue or recovery in affected regions or communities. There will be subject matter experts as guests in our future shows that will assist our listening audience with the latest knowledge, skills and ability to prepare for risk reduction and hopefully ensure our family’s safety. There are at least two things certain about any natural or man-made disaster; it does not racially discriminate and it impacts all areas of people activity, i.e., economics, education, labor, law, politics, etc. Please join us and feel free to call-in at 323-927-2913.     Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing. While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow.  It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam. Within the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad University, Samiyyah underwent educational training and worked as a teacher’s assistant. Since 2005, Samiyyah has had the privilege of se

    Tell it Like it Is: Black Independent Filmmaking in NYC 1968-1986 The Film Society of Lincoln Center – Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center and Walter Reade Theater  Friday, February 6th – Thursday, February 19th  Tonight’s program highlights the opening night film, “Losing Ground” by Kathleen Collins. Guests include co-producer and director of cinematography, Ronald Gray and Nina Collins, daughter of the late Kathleen Collins. Ronald Gray is a filmmaker, musician and photographer. Working in film, he has been a producer, director, cinematographer and editor. His first film was the multi-award-winning Transmagnifican Dambamuality (1976), which also received two Creative Arts Program grants and one American Film Institute grant. Gray collaborated with Kathleen Collins as co-producer, cinematographer and co-editor on The Cruz Brothers and Miss Malloy and Losing Ground.  Nina Collins' mother, Kathleen Collins’s film career began in 1972. She was working at Channel Thirteen as an editor when she met Ronald Gray.
