  • Emerging trends in breast cancer research-Promises and challenges

    14/03/2018 Duración: 54min

We’ve made tremendous progress in breast cancer research in the last 20 years with advances in targeted therapies like Herceptin (and other Her2-targeted therapies) newly approved CDK4/6 inhibitors (Ibrance, Verzinio, Kisqali) for advanced breast cancer, the use of adjuvant (systemic) therapy to reduce risk of recurrence, and genetic tests that allow us to better predict risk and risk of recurrence. These advances are evidenced in a nearly 40% decrease in breast cancer-related deaths in the last 30 years and more than 3.5 million women and men with a history of breast cancer in the US. While the latter number speaks to the success of therapies and early detection, it also speaks to a great failure in preventing breast cancer and breast cancer metastasis and it does not count the number of women and men who live with long-term effects of their cancer treatment or the disparity in breast cancer outcomes among African American women compared to white women.
