Generation Justice

We share Part 2 of our 2015 Best of Generation Justice Series with you. We look back at the media justice victories of 2015 - including the FCC’s vote for both net neutrality and prison phone justice. Also, we celebrate how local campaigns and organizing can create change - from protecting ethnic studies curriculum, addressing institutional racism, breaking the silence about NM’s behavioral health crisis, and speaking out about the injustices we see.

We kick off our 2015 Best of Generation Justice Series! We dedicate the show to amazing youth that organize to create change in our community. Youth-led action this year manifested itself in several ways - whether it was developing irrigation systems, walking-out of standardized tests, or testifying to legislators. This year we have seen an upswell of student activism on college campuses across the country calling out institutional racism that continues to underlie educational settings. This program features student organizers and activists from around the country: Occidental College, the University of New Mexico, and Ithaca College. Activism can be expressed through research, film, education, law, and many other facets of society. We’re going to share knowledge from Dr. Geni Eng and Dr. Jennifer Schaal about how their research is working to undo racism in the medical system that’s causing disparities in cancer patients. We’re also going to learn from some powerful women that spoke at the MALCS Plenary “Working in Solidarity & Across Intersections of Identity” who are all working to create solidarity through different organizations!

Join us as we share some of the exciting work that’s been going on here at Generation Justice - including introducing our newest fellow, Kateri Zuni, and the launch of a new project about New Mexico’s Behavioral Health System.

Tune in to hear what Prison Phone Justice is and how an upcoming FCC vote could be a huge victory for millions! We’ll be chatting with Steven Renderos from the Center for Media Justice, and Carrie Wilkinson who helped start the Washington Prison Phone Justice Campaign. We will also share powerful testimonies, including from from Jazlin Mendoza, a GJ youth member who recently spoke at a Congressional hearing about the #RightToConnect!

Here on Generation Justice, we discuss health equity and what it truly looks like in New Mexico - from the climate crisis, to just being able to access healthcare resources locally. On this program, we are joined by Juntos, a climate justice organization, to discuss their upcoming screening of Frontera!, and how they are collaborating with the People’s Climate Movement for a National Day of Action. We are also featuring Anicia Roybal, a youth leader from Española, to discuss her important work around health equity.

Generation Justice was joined by Tannia Esparza, Executive Director of Young Women United, and Amarisa Barboa, a youth leader, to discuss reproductive rights and reproductive justice in Albuquerque and nationally. We also take you the #PinkOut Rally on UNM campus to hear why community members support Planned Parenthood.

This weeks exciting & creative show takes you to OYE 2015. Organizing Youth Engagement is the state’s largest grassroots youth advocacy conference. Since 2009, a coalition of local organizations led by the New Mexico Forum for Youth in Community have come together to plan OYE. There were workshops and trainings all weekend surrounding issues of ethnic studies, police brutality, cultural appropriation, teen suicide, and standardized testing like the PARCC. Tune in to hear their ideas through speech, poem, and song!

This weeks show brings you the knowledge and passion from the “Indigenous Shifts of Resistance & Healing” Plenary that was held earlier this year during the MALCS 2015 Summer Institute. This was the first plenary this year at Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS) and featured some powerful speakers that created a dialogue to honor intersectionality and transformation in a safe and supportive space. The speakers include Mattee Jim, from First Nations Community HealthSource and a Board Member of the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico; Radmilla Cody, an anti-domestic violence activist and organizer; shash yázhí, the Lead Consultant of Eagle Evolution; and Dr. Yolanda Teran Maigua, part of the Advisory Council for the IIA Indigenous Institute of the Americas. The discussion will be moderated by Renae Gray, Program Assistant and Trans* Inclusion Specialist at UNM Lgbtq Resource Center

Inspiration. Creativity. Expression. We’ll be sharing with you the beautiful work of local young writers from the ‪#‎VOCES2015‬ Summer Intensive Writing Program. VOCES has been an awesome part of the Albuquerque writing scene… giving youth a platform to express themselves and to challenge themselves. Finding your voice is hard, and sharing your voice is even harder. In this program, we’ll hear what these strong young writers have to say, and we’ll even be sharing a few of their performances.

In this show, we will be sharing stories from the Northern Diné Youth Committee about the impact of the ‪#‎GoldKingMine‬ waste spill. GJ’s own Pauly Denetclaw will also be sharing about her experience driving around the Four Corners area and collecting information about the 3 million gallon toxic waste spill. #GJLove

This program features local youth leaders in Albuquerque and highlights the issues that they organize and stand for. Youth featured include Marissa Vigil, Ernesto Godina, Hope Alvarado and Izzy Mustafa.

On this week's show we hear from successful New Mexicans who happen to be part of the Generation Justice fellowship, a program that helps young journalists of color build their skills while becoming the next generation of socially conscious media makers. We will welcome in our newest GJ fellow Tamara Colaque. She will share with us her powerful story and how she hopes to grow over the next year. This program will also feature Pauly Denetclaw, GJ YR1 Fellow, who will share her summer experience as a Knight CUNYJ Fellow and NPR's Latino USA Intern in New York City.
