As our country endures the latest in a long history of police violence towards Black people, we speak with poet and singer Ebony Isis Booth. Ebony shares about the Black experience in America after the murders of Alton Sterling and Filando Castile. In this interview, Ms. Booth gives insight into the reasons why Black people are targeted by police and shares poetry inspired by the grieving families of the young men murdered at the hands of police officers. Ebony Isis Booth is a poet in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She currently works as the Programs and Communications Coordinator at the Harwood Arts Center and is the co-founder of Burque Noir, a collaborative event between like-minded and multi-cultured artists who observe an underrepresented demographic in Albuquerque.

We interview Adriel Orozco of New Mexico Immigrant Law Center and Italia Aranda of New Mexico Dream Team for an update on the recent Supreme Court decision over DAPA/DACA+. We also speak with Wendy Linebrink-Allison from New Mexico Crisis and Access Line to discuss Mental Health First Aid. Enjoy our program along with a calendar of events and some cool tunes!

And our GJ youth members report back on their experience attending the 18th annual Allied Media Conference where they learned about digital organizing, surveillance and many more of today’s most pressing social justice and media justice issues.

In this podcast we speak with Jim Gannon & Diane Leal from Catholic Charities New Mexico (CCASFNM) about the resettlement center and we hear from Haneen Amer, a youth poet whose family recently settled in Albuquerque from Iraq. We are also joined by Ludella Awad, a 16-year old Syrian-American author from Albuquerque who has published two books that express her feelings about Syria and the masks humans wear.

Two interstate exchanges at $30 million each, an increased tax burden of over $1 billion for schools, roads, and other infrastructure and health impacts related to the increased exposure to blowing sand are just some of the concerns the community has raised about the Santolina Master Plan. Tune in to hear our latest updates from Lorraine Archibald of the Center for Social Sustainable Systems and Juan Reynosa of the Southwest Organizing Project about the Santolina Master Plan. We will also learn about other community efforts to protect New Mexico. Elizabeth Fulreader will fill us in on what’s happening at Talking Talons Youth Leadership, a non-profit inspiring youth through environmental leadership.

In this show, we discuss the Department of Justice’s 37-page report on UNM’s handling of sexual assault on campus. We will hear from May Sagbakken of the Rape Crisis Center of Central New Mexico, students and Cathy Cook from Students for Reproductive Justice. We discuss the report and what resources are available for all survivors of sexual violence.

Over the past few years, we’ve been witness to numerous police killings of unarmed women and men of color. At the same time—from New York City, to Ferguson, Albuquerque and San Francisco—community has stood up against police violence. Sunday, we’re joined by Equipto one of the #Frisco5 activist who recently ended 17-day hunger strike against police violence and racism in San Francisco. We discuss the hunger strike and what led up to it. We’re also joined by advocate Ane Romero to discuss Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s history and how to get involved.
