3 July 2022 - 4th Sunday after Pentecost - In our Gospel passage today, Jesus was aware that the national situation was desperate and people were growing frustrated and fearful, some even panicking and turning to extremism as they looked for the answer. In this context, Jesus sent out the 70 with urgent instructions to heal the sick and proclaim the Kingdom of God, and not to become diverted along the way. This passage surely speaks to us today. It is a powerful reminder that in our frustrations with our societies and churches, we cannot be tempted to look for instant, non-biblical solutions. The work of a disciple must rest upon Jesus’ assurance that God’s kingship will continue to expand despite political and cultural obstacles. Thus, Rev. 12 June 2022 - Trinty Sunday - In today's world, truth has become personalized and relative. It is no longer acceptable to speak of “the truth” but can say only “my truth” and “your truth.” In John’s Gospel, Jesus often speaks of “the truth" – which is a correct understanding of who He is, along with right living (doing the truth). Both are necessary to maintain that gift of divine life that we share with the Father and the Son through the Holy Spirit. And no matter how good or how dysfunctional our childhood home was, we all know what the ideal home should be. But where can we find it? The biblical understanding is that home is in our relationship with God. It’s a gift that’s on offer, one that we don’t have to earn. We enter solely by grace. It’s a phenomenal promise, but our residency there depends upon maintaining the relationship. Our readings today teach us what is essential towards that end. 1 May 2022 - Third Sunday of Easter - In the Gospel of John, the resurrected Jesus again reveals himself, tenderly providing to a group of weary and wavering disciples a miraculous catch of fish. He also supplies them with breakfast, assurance, restored relationship with Himself, and the call to steadfastly follow Him in caring for His flock and expanding His kingdom. Peter, near the end of his life of faithfully following Jesus even to martyrdom, reflects on this event and its importance for us in our weariness and wavering. Rev. John Howanstine reminds us how Peter concludes his first epistle with this encouragement: "And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast." 24 April 2022 - At the Crossroads 2022 - In 2016, Andrew Brunson was arrested by the Turkish government on false charges and imprisoned for more than two years. Andrew connects his imprisonment to a prayer he began praying in 2007: "Father God, draw me so close to your heart that you will trust me with the authority to start waves." While Andrew believes his arrest was a satanic attack, he also believes God used it to test him and refine him. Andrew says not hearing God's voice or sensing his presence in prison broke him. Yet the deep-rooted love nurtured over years of pursuing the heart of God sustained Andrew through his dark night of the soul and drew him into an intimacy known only by God's battle-tested saints.
