Tanked Up

This week is a very special episode we sit down with Alan and Zoe from Brewgooder, the craft brewery that donates 100% of their profits to clean water projects. Their goal is to provide clean water to 1,000,000 people and they have done it for over 40,000 people already. Inspiring stuff! Also we talk about the family history of Streets of Rage, the life-changing wonder that is the N64, Hellblade, GTA San Andreas, amazing soundtracks e.g. GTA Vice City and, of course, Streets of Rage. #rageheads We all enjoy a few of the 'Clean Water' lager by, of course, Brewgooder.

This week Aadil does a mini-roundup of mobile games, courtesy of hours of travel. We chat "A Good Snowman is Hard to Build", "Concrete Jungle", "Dropsy" along with a couple smaller games like "Wolfenstein II" and "Super Mario Odyssey". Lucy drinks the 'Body Riddle' pale ale from "Whiplash". Aadil goes for the 'Don't Mess with Yorkshire' ale from "Northern Monk". And Ben goes for the hefty 11.2% 'Backwards Bastard' aged in bourbon oak barrels ale by "Founders".

Well we tried. This is two pods mashed together. The first is a beer each and a discussion on Spec Ops: The Line between Ben, Lucy and Aadil. This then runs into a second podcast recorded the week before. In it Ben had to leave because of a screaming child and then a computer reboot, unscheduled, lost his audio. So, it's Lucy talking about Cuphead, Aadil talking about Road Redemption and then pure chaos because Aadil and Lucy were unsupervised. Enjoy.

Part 2 of the greatest collaboration of the year. We've another very beer filled two hours for you. Don't worry it doesn't affect our ability to be eloquent, concise and stay on topic at all.  But we drink more, more than we've ever drank before on the show. We start with the board games Ben has recently played and Dickie and Kit guess them, talk beer styles and Steve gets into his love of West Ham. Kit discusses the videogames he plays on the PS3 and Dickie talks local landmarks. Steve then gets into his videogaming and a lot of Rocket League talk. Sam's laugh gets louder and louder. We discuss older board games like Atmosphere, Pokemon and Live action gaming / escape rooms. Then it's a lot of beer talk. And Steve has a wee behind the shed. We had 5 beers in part 1. Now we drink 10. 'Ara Bier' from De Dolle, Wild Weather's 'Don't Pine For Me Apple Tina', Cloudwater's 'Pilsner Mandarina Bavaria' and the Magic Rock 'Cherry Cola Vice' start us off. We get traditional with the Langton Brewery 'Inclined Plain'

That's right, Ben is joined by Sam of Good Chemistry brewing and Steve, Dickie and Kit from Chance & Counters, a Bristol based board game cafe, and this is only part 1. It's the biggest collaboration of the year! We chat all things Chance & Counters, who they are and what they do. We get into the beer they've brewed with Good Chemistry brewing and the LARP Halloween event they designed and are running at GC brewery this Halloween weekend 2017. There's talk of Star Trek, artichoke hearts in Fallout, fresh IPAs and hazy beers, First Person Shooters and iteration and we delve a little into Dickie's video gaming. We drink some beers, of course. We start with the Burning Sky / Fork 'Les Amis Du Brassage', sample the big Good Chemistry / Chance & Counters 'Bonne Chance' and the Lervig / Warpigs 'Socks 'N' Sandals' before moving into Belgian beers with 'Kriek Boon' from Brouwerij Boon and 'Orval' from Brasserie dOrval.

Aadil, Ben and Lucy get together to discuss all the games. Well all the games that Lucy has been playing anyway as Ben and Aadil haven't played much. Lucy reels off games from her list but really gets into Splatoon 2, Night in the Woods, Thimbleweed Park and SteamWorld Dig 2. Ben has played a little of Kingdoms and Castles. Aadil went out and played a table top game, that's right a game on a table top not a video. Wait, no, a screen. We jump back into Lucy's list and Life is Strange: Before the Storm and Lichtspeer. Beers! Ben drinks 'Snake Fear' DIPA a collab from Wild Brewing Co and Garage Brewing Co and the 'Moose Mousse' chocolate milk stout from Fierce Beer. Aadil has two big beers with 'The Big 1' DIPA from Fallen Brewing Co. followed by the 'NW DIPA Galaxy' from Cloudwater. Lucy tarts with the 'I Love You Honey Bunny' American IPA from Siren Craft Brew and 'Sonrisa' pale ale by Buxton Brewery.

We talk Child of Light, drunken couch co-op after the Bristol Craft Beer Festival. Aadil talks a little about BoJack Horseman and its emotional realism, and Hexcells: Infinite. But don't worry Ben played some games: "Total War - Warhammer", the Chaos Warrior race DLC, "Subsurface Circular" and its very cool Developer Commentary mode, "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter", the "Call of Duty WW2 beta". We move on to talk about the upcoming Battle Royale mode on Fortnite, and the complaints from the PUBG crowd, as well as the politics behind cross-play (versus the technical hurdles), resulting in the inevitable console generation conversation. And we get a visit from Perry to boot. We start out with the "Banded Peak" west coast style IPA 'Southern Aspect', and Ben gets to taste the Smoked Dunkel from "Wild Rose Brewery", which we talked to the brewer about last episode.

We've got a real special episode this week. Aadil is on the tail-end of his trip in Canada, and met up with one of the brewers over at Wild Rose Brewery in Calgary, Mark Kerrigan. We start out with the usual challenge of gaming/life balance, then Mark's partialness to all things Bethesda as well as our console histories and LAN cafes and parties. We touch on the growing craft brew-scene in and around Calgary, and the competing technologies used for draft(ish) quality brews in your fridge. Mark also shares his origin stories of both games, the brewing industry and beer in general. The craft brew revolution and what an amazing time it is to like craft beer. We touch on Seasonal and one-off offerings and the 'craft' trend of newer breweries moving on with little stability of selection. We also commiserate on the terribleness of 'pumpkin' spices amongst all kinds of other things. We started with two experimental brews 'Smoked Dunkel' and the 'Smoked Porter'. This week we start off with a geography lesson, and then straight on to burglary. Weddings and chauffeuring (along with the astonishing reveal about Ben and perogies). We wax intellectual, read: gripe, about time passing and being old and not recognising places we used to live/go to. We then talk "Sonic Mania", as well as some highlights of the current switch library, Zelda: A Link to the Past. How bad do original polygon games look today... Our console histories... and Pyro-mania. Lucy has the "Pohjala" dry-hopped Saison, 'Hooaeg. Aadil has the Czech-style Pilsner from "Big Rock" and then 'Scottish Heavy' scotch style ale from the same, finishing with the surprising 'Duchesse De Bourgogne' sour ale from "Brouwerij Verhaeghe". Ben has the 'Pathmaker' pale ale from "Black Sheep", followed up by "Wolf Warning" IPA, and has a cheeky "Northern Monk" 'New World' IPA. Ben, Lucy and Aadil get together to discuss Sonic Mania, Call of Duty WW2 beta, Linelight and Framed 2 as well as the nostalgic 'SEGA' intro, SEGA the publisher, Battlefield (of course) and a couple of point and click games were mentioned. The beers this week are Oskar Blues 'Beerito' Mexican Lager and Sierra Nevada 'Tropical Torpedo' American IPA for Aadil. Lucy drinks Firestone Walker/Beavertown 'West Side Beavo' Lager and 'Peacher Man' Belgian Wit from Beavertown. Ben has the last of his Estonian beers with the Õllenaut 'Sesoon' Rye Saison and Põhjala 'Must Kuld' coffee porter.

We talk changing difficulty levels and going through old games, and new ones with the new 'Story-mode' in Horizon. We then talk about dream jobs tasting beers, and testing video games. It's Gluten-free week here at Tanked Up. All beers this week are gluten-free for all you celiacs out there. Both Ben and Aadil start off with the "Mikeller" 'I Wish' IPA. We're back, after a brief summer hiatus and we are talking "Hellblade", gaming droughts and the room 1 & 2 before moving on to this week's topic. Loot boxes, pay-to-win and children gambling. Also Aadil gets a little yelly at the end... for biological reasons. Its a special beer week, celebrating the "Honest Brew" fan designed special edition brew 'Free Lunch' in collaboration with "Northern Monk". Lucy has the 'Travel Notes' International IPA from "Northen Monk" and "Fieldwork", as well as Lonely Planet.

This week we talk 'Splatoon 2', the 'Destiny 2' beta, 'Yonder: the cloud chronicles' and 'The Final Station' before moving on to our topic. A Czech brewery "Aurosa" has emerged releasing the 'first beer for her'® a pink-bottled number, discussion ensues. Lego may be mentioned. Aadil starts things off with the 'Yellow Sub' IPA from "Blacks of Kinsale" (Cork), while Ben has the "Põhjala" dry-hopped Saison 'Hooaeg'. They both try out the 'Loral & Ardi' trippel collaboration from the folks over at "Cloudwater/verdant/Lost & Grounded". Lucy takes on the "Fierce/Beer 52" collaboration 'Pink Grapefruit Pale Ale'.

As always, we talk the games we've been playing, "Yonder: the cloud catcher chronicles", "Duelyst" & Aadil couldn't resist talking some more "Superhot" as it is out on PSN now, with its VR counterpart as well. Our topic this week is all about "craft" vs independent beer, and how the big corporations are buying things up with people like SIBA wanting a label to show off small and fully independent breweries. Ben starts off with the "Wylam" Pale Ale 'Remain in Light', then the 'Kingslayer' DIPA from "Buxton". Lucy has the 'Alpha Beta' session IPA by "Ilkley" and the "Magic Rock" peach and raspberry berliner weisse 'Bellini Vice'. Aadil goes for the 'Local Motive' session IPA by "Fallen Brewery" and then the 'CLWB Tropicana' tropical IPA by "Tiny Rebel".

This week is quite a special one, as we opened up the 13-hour livestream for "Gamers United Against Demnetia". We talk memory games, times our memory has failed us in games, games as part of dementia/memory research, games as both preventative and palliative brain care, and a whole lot else besides. Ben and Aadil share one of Lucy's favourite beers the 'Steady Rolling Man' pale ale from the folks over at "DEYA". The boys finish off the conversation with the "Northern Monks Patron Project" pineapple and grapefruit juice IPA '4.02'. Lucy starts off with the 'Cryo Baby' session IPA from "Magic Rock Brewery", following it up with "Beerbliotek" 'Single Hop Mosaic' IPA.

We talk "Submerged", the beautiful more exploration than narrative NEWS game, killing and surviving in "Dead by Daylight". Our topic this week is Sales! Particularly the big sales events of the year, e.g. steam summer, and seemingly never-ending sales in games that tease our pocketbooks constantly. Aadil rabbits on about the "Enhanced Steam" chrome extension, and Ben still hasn't quite bought a steam link. Ben and Aadil are rejoined by the on-the-mend Lucy talking some more e3, with "Spider-man" causing a diatribe from Aadil about Quick-Time Events and character powers in them. We touch on "Tacoma", "Cup-Head", "Life is Strange Season 2", the "Devolver Digital" conference, and the XXXBone. We move on to talk beer subscriptions services, like Beer 52, Honest Brew, and of course gaming subscription services, like the new XboX games pass and Humble Bundle Monthly, and a quick shout-out to SteamGiveAways. Its that time again, E3 is fast approaching and its our first prediction episode. But first we start off with a discussion on the growing trend of craft beer availability in the supermarkets. Then we talk predictions on Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. Ben and Lucy start with 'New World' IPA from "Northern Monk Brewing co.", while Aadil starts off with 'Wolf Warning' double brew lager from "Sofiero Bryggeri".
