Jonnie, Tony Jones & I were lucky to bring the Homebrewed Christianity heat LIVE at the Progressive Youth Ministry conference.  This episode includes some of the excitement that was had.  It kicks off with a tasty interview with DePaul professor of religion, theo-blogger & Moltmaniac Scott Paeth.  We discuss his new book (which is awesome and easy to read) The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians, the Hauerwasian Mafia, and the future of progressive Christian ethics in America.  Then Tony Jones and I had a serious battle of au contraire mon fraire... Tony Jones did not win.  That was great BUT... little did we anticipate Jonnie would secretly orchestrate his victory with a statement that blew our mind. If that wasn't enough we had Trey Pearson of Everyday Sunday & Carter DJ-ing the show & post-pod dance party...oh yeah that happened... Phyllis Tickle was at Fuller Seminary for a talk about her new book "The Age of the Spirit". She then came over to (a)Spire to have a pint with us. This was no ordinary pint! Tripp brewed 'The Grain Emergence: a 500 year rummage ale'.   We do some Q & R with Phyllis - then Barry Taylor chats with her. Then we played "Au Contraire Mon Frère II" with Tripp and Tony.  Round 3 will be in Chicago at the Progressive Youth Ministry Conference later this month. This is a rough-cut edit. That means that a couple of swear words made it through the filter ... and that some things removed for public conception.  We want to thank Andy and his team plus all those who helped to make this event happen and to those who came out and made this an amazing night. The HomeGrown Christianity series is pleased to welcome Jen Butler to discuss creation-care and Christian perspectives. We talk about the unique opportunity of our times and the challenges that are posed when addressing eco-theology in a seminary setting. The Reverend Jennifer L. Butler is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, where she currently serves in a call at First Congregational UCC in Corvallis, Oregon. In addition to pastoring, she is an adjunct instructor at George Fox Seminary, where she teaches ecology, theology, and ethics in the Earthkeeping concentration. Her first book (co-authored with two of her teaching colleagues), On Earth as in Heaven, will be published in 2014 by Baker Academic Press. As you will hear in the interview, she wrote her master's thesis on ecofeminism and evangelicalism. You will enjoy her insights and passion about the variety of issues that impact the subject. Who doesn’t love J.R.R. Tolkien, the mythology of Middle Earth, and getting to see Smaug (the most EPIC of all dragons) on the big screen?  If Led Zeppelin can sing about it and nerds can roll 12 sided dice about it, then it must be pretty awesome.  On Thursday February 6th we hosted a live video streaming podcast with Gregory Walter to nerd out about Tolkien’s world.  It was an amazing conversation in which you get convo about the book, movie, and all the Middle Earth mythology. Our guest is Dr. Gregory Walter, a professor of religion and Pro Grade Hobbiter.  He is a professor at St. Olaf College and was recently on the podcast to discuss his new book Being Promised: Theology, Gift, and Practice.  At the end of the podcast we realized our mutual love for the Hobbit and this podcast idea was born!
