Youth Ministers, the Niebuhr Revival, @pastormark & Other Goodies #PYM14
13/04/2014 Duración: 01h02minJonnie, Tony Jones & I were lucky to bring the Homebrewed Christianity heat LIVE at the Progressive Youth Ministry conference. This episode includes some of the excitement that was had. It kicks off with a tasty interview with DePaul professor of religion, theo-blogger & Moltmaniac Scott Paeth. We discuss his new book (which is awesome and easy to read) The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians, the Hauerwasian Mafia, and the future of progressive Christian ethics in America. Then Tony Jones and I had a serious battle of au contraire mon fraire... Tony Jones did not win. That was great BUT... little did we anticipate Jonnie would secretly orchestrate his victory with a statement that blew our mind. If that wasn't enough we had Trey Pearson of Everyday Sunday & Carter DJ-ing the show & post-pod dance party...oh yeah that happened... Our wonderful host 4th Presbyterian & John Vest were amazing & even arranged to have some delicious Revolution Brewing & Goose Island beer at the celebration. Chalice,

Why Write a Liberal Theology? w/ Douglas Ottati
07/04/2014 Duración: 01h38minWhy write a liberal theology? That's a good question & we got an interview size answer! Buckle your theological safety belt because this episode is going to get seriously awesome. If you remember Dr. Ottati's last visit to the podcast then you are already excited! Professor Ottati is the Craig Family Distinguished Professor in Reformed Theology and Justice Ministry at Davidson College in North Carolina. He is one of the best communicators I know. Not only is he a top-notch nerd but he has a strong love for the church and bringing theological goodness into local congregations. PS. Ottati rocks the name game with a level of skill that rivals Jurgen Moltmann's fun with Tony Jones and I. On top of the most awesome first volume of Theology for Liberal Protestants you can check out Theology for Liberal Presbyterians and Other Endangered Species, Reforming Protestantism: Christian Commitment in Today’s World, and Hopeful Realism: Recovering the Poetry of Theology. Phyllis Tickle LIVE 3D & Au Contraire Mon Frère II
14/03/2014 Duración: 58minPhyllis Tickle was at Fuller Seminary for a talk about her new book "The Age of the Spirit". She then came over to (a)Spire to have a pint with us. This was no ordinary pint! Tripp brewed 'The Grain Emergence: a 500 year rummage ale'. We do some Q & R with Phyllis - then Barry Taylor chats with her. Then we played "Au Contraire Mon Frère II" with Tripp and Tony. Round 3 will be in Chicago at the Progressive Youth Ministry Conference later this month. This is a rough-cut edit. That means that a couple of swear words made it through the filter ... and that some things removed for public conception. We want to thank Andy and his team plus all those who helped to make this event happen and to those who came out and made this an amazing night. PS Claire also brought some amazing home brew. That was tasty. We also want to wish Phyllis a Happy 80th Birthday!! Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. TNT: Tripp's Timed Process Responses, Drugs & God as 'He'
06/03/2014 Duración: 01h09minAhmed (@woodylovesJesus) & Tim 'the Elder of Hops' (@timothytalks) visit the throw-down! This TNT was recorded after the Hobbit LIVE video-cast with Gregory Walter. Suffice to say, it was a rowdy affair. We start with a 3 minute challenge for Tripp to answer each of Process Theology's big concerns. The 3 of us then judge him after each round. The 2nd question relates to drugs and tragedy. The 3rd question is about the gender of God. You might want to skip to the 8th min when the action really starts. In minute 38 we change things up. Need to look up any theo-words? The Hobbit, Smaug, & Weak Power w/ Gregory Walter
11/02/2014 Duración: 01h48minWho doesn’t love J.R.R. Tolkien, the mythology of Middle Earth, and getting to see Smaug (the most EPIC of all dragons) on the big screen? If Led Zeppelin can sing about it and nerds can roll 12 sided dice about it, then it must be pretty awesome. On Thursday February 6th we hosted a live video streaming podcast with Gregory Walter to nerd out about Tolkien’s world. It was an amazing conversation in which you get convo about the book, movie, and all the Middle Earth mythology. Our guest is Dr. Gregory Walter, a professor of religion and Pro Grade Hobbiter. He is a professor at St. Olaf College and was recently on the podcast to discuss his new book Being Promised: Theology, Gift, and Practice. At the end of the podcast we realized our mutual love for the Hobbit and this podcast idea was born! You can check out the video HERE. Gregory's list of the essential Tolkien texts can be found HERE.
