Embroidery artist Susan Shafrir's new solo exhibition "Fabrication" opens at the Haifa Auditorium on January 19th. Shafrir spoke to KAN reporter Naomi  Segal about her fabric art, a mixed media technique of embroidery that uses threads and needles, paints natural materials, fabrics and plastic waste, and how the works speak to her social conscience and concerns for the environment. “The Seam Line” , a groundbreaking five-part series, created  and narrated by  Avi Melamed explores the conflict in and over Jerusalem. Melamed, a fourth-generation Arabic-speaking Jerusalemite Jew, and Middle East expert  was the Advisor on Arab Affairs during one of the most violent and chaotic chapters in the history of Jerusalem – the First Intifada.   The Begin Center in Jerusalem  is screening three episodes from The Seam Line this Wednesday at 7-30 pm.  The 2- days of hearings concluded on Friday at the International Court of Justice at The Hague on South Africa’s claim that Israel is guilty of genocide in the war in Gaza. A spokesperson for the German government announced that Germany would stand alongside Israel, and that allegations of genocide against the IDF are baseless.   KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Nick Kaufman, a defense counsel at the International Court in the Hague and a former UN prosecutor, asking him first about the South African legal presentation. The Israeli Bar Association has set up a website that matches war victims who need legal assistance with lawyers who are willing to provide this assistance for free. They were aided by a senior American lawyer Hank Greenberg, a former President of the New York Bar Association, who help the bureau set up the system based on similar endeavors in the United States. The new system went live for the first time last week.The initiative was also led by Adv. Amit Becher, Head of the Israel Bar Association, and underscores the commitment of legal professionals across the globe to support Israeli citizens in these challenging times. A significant challenge for evacuees from confrontation line areas is the ability to work. In the wake of the October 7th attack, the Merage Foundation, which has been engaged in development of the western Negev for some 25 years, advanced a work opportunity initiative that seeks to match evacuees with potential employers in a manner that fosters career development and economic sustainability. With talk of the “Day After,” the United States is pushing for a “revised” Palestinian Authority to take control of the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians believe that Marwan Barghouti, currently serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for multiple accounts of murder and membership of a terrorist organization, would be able to rebuild the Palestine Liberation Organization after almost two decades of stagnation under octogenarian Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and facilitate a reconciliation government. Gershon Baskin, the Middle East Director of the British NGO International Communities Organization, holds that Barghouti backs a two-state solution and should be released. Baskin, who is also a former hostage negotiator with Hamas, including with the deal to release IDF soldier Gilad Shalit,  also said that he believes the only way to get the Israeli abductees released is to end the war immediately. The right-wing NGO Regavim has released a report claiming  that the security concepts that enabled Hamas to carry out the October 7th massacre along the Gaza  security fence are alive and well – along the security barrier of Judea and Samaria. Regavim says that with the support of the European Union, the Palestinian Authority has built tens of thousands of illegal structures along the “separation barrier” – all within 1 kilometer of Israeli communities in the central and coastal plain regions. According to the annual report of the Hebrew University’s Israel Observatory on Femicide (the killing of a woman or girl on account of her gender) there were 22 cases of femicide in Israel in 2023.  All of the perpetrators were men. According to the IOF report, sometimes the murder of women reported in the media does not constitute femicide, when she is killed by accident or in a criminal act, and not on account of her gender.  Regarding the ethnicity of the victims,50 percent were Jewish, 9% were foreign nationals, and 41% were Israeli Arabs, including one Druze woman, five Bedouin women, and three Muslim women. The humanitarian aid reaching the Gaza Strip, some of which has been confiscated by Hamas terrorists, needs to be time limited. This according to Gerald Steinberg Professor emeritus of political science at Bar Ilan University, and president of NGO Monitor. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that the concept of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, not just during this war, but over the past 75 years, needs to be phased out as a way for Palestinians to stand up on their own. In Ofakim today, the KKL-JNF inaugurated the “the Path of Heroines” that symbolizes the heroism of women on October 7th and during the war. The heroines will include IDF female officers, women who survived the inferno, police officers and a cowherder from the Gaza Periphery who stayed to milk the cows under fire. One of those recognized was Noa Abitboul a 23-year-old paramedic for Magen David Adom who treated injured and helped evacuate dozens of wounded under fire. The Knesset finance committee recently extended to December the compensation framework for businesses that have suffered because of the war. However, many of those applying for support say the application process is convoluted and mired in  bureaucracy.
