With talk of the “Day After,” the United States is pushing for a “revised” Palestinian Authority to take control of the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians believe that Marwan Barghouti, currently serving five life sentences in an Israeli prison for multiple accounts of murder and membership of a terrorist organization, would be able to rebuild the Palestine Liberation Organization after almost two decades of stagnation under octogenarian Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and facilitate a reconciliation government. Gershon Baskin, the Middle East Director of the British NGO International Communities Organization, holds that Barghouti backs a two-state solution and should be released. Baskin, who is also a former hostage negotiator with Hamas, including with the deal to release IDF soldier Gilad Shalit,  also said that he believes the only way to get the Israeli abductees released is to end the war immediately.
