The monkeypox outbreak has been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization. The classification is the highest alert that the WHO can issue and follows a worldwide upsurge in cases. It came at the end of the second meeting of the WHO's emergency committee on the virus. We spoke with Prof Cyrille Cohen, an immunologist at Bar Ilan university, and asked him if the WHO took the right decision, bearing in mind the committee was split on the question of declaring a global health emergency.  Moroccan King Mohammed VI has recognized the country’s Jewish community  as a component of national culture. Russian President Vladimir Putin was left waiting and fidgeting for 50 seconds by Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan ahead of talks in Tehran today, prompting media to draw parallels with Putin making him and other leaders stand by in the past.A video released by the Turkish presidency showed Putin standing in front of his chair and the nations' two flags, his hands clasped, mouth twitching and his stance shifting before Erdogan appears. Dr. Eytan Hai Cohen Yanarocak, an expert on Turkey from the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security and the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University, said it appears Erdogan was acting in a vindictive move of revenge. Three Israeli villages have been selected by the Ministry of Tourism to present their candidacies for the UN’s World Tourism Organization’s “Best Tourism Villages.” These are the Circassian village of Kfar Kama, the exotic Neot Smadar in the Negev and the historic village of Zippori in the Galilee. The selection will help develop tourism and safeguard the unique rural villages. The Nazareth district court will convene for an urgent session to discuss new findings in the retrial of Roman Zadorov, who was convicted in the 2006 murder of 13-year-old Tair Rada at her school in Katzrin. The request was submitted by defense counsel  after results from DNA testing showed that a strand of hair found on the body of the 13-year-old girl could be that of the ex-boyfriend of Olla Kravchenko, a woman who was a former suspect in the murder. The man, Adir Habani, had previously told police that Kravchenko confessed to him that she murdered the teen while wearing his clothing. The Nazareth district court has agreed to the early release for rapist and sex offender Alon Kastiel, who will leave prison 7 months before the end of his term, despite objections from state prosecutors and by his victims.  Kastiel is being released on the condition that he stays outside of Tel Aviv — the city where he committed his crimes and where some of his victims still live or work.  KAN's Mark Weiss spoke with Miriam Schler, executive director of the Tel Aviv Sexual Assault Crisis  Center. A package of “good will gestures” presented by Defense Minister Benny Gantz will result in de facto Palestinian annexation of large sections of Area C – the portion of Judea and Samaria under full Israeli jurisdiction. This according to the right-wing NGO Regavim. It includes “legalization” of hundreds of illegally-built structures and expansion of Arab villages, isolating and choking existing Jewish communities and threatening the security and feasibility of the entire settlement enterprise. A three-day performing arts festival is opening in Jerusalem that offers over 50 shows and over 100 performers featuring short, pithy original works. It’s the Bazak festival and it opens tonight at Beit Mazie and runs through Thursday July 14th. A project of the Theater Company Jerusalem, it offers 3 days with of performances in a creative happening taking place on the verandas, foyers and parking lots of the theaters as well as in the five halls.
