Anyone who reads the bible finds many disturbing passages in the Old Testament where God is portrayed as being violent. This disturbs many of us because it does not jive with what Jesus teaches. The issue here of how we understand God is so important because it translates into how we live out our lives. If God is violent there are implications and if God is love there are implications.

Our theological stance and what we believe the Bible is, e.g., "dictated by God" all the way, to "it's only a human document," is part of how we approach these issues. This sermon will delineate different ways we approach these issues and what the implications are for our lives.

As we recall the traditional Wesleyan service of the New Year, this service will help us celebrate the Christian Gospel that allows "do overs." We can pick up our lives anew with a clean page!
