Woodmen Valley Chapel

“You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). Contrary to some of the polytheistic faiths of the nations around them, the Israelites were called to worship God and God alone. Though we live in a culture of diverse beliefs, we too must declare our absolute allegiance to God through Christ, for there is only one name under heaven by which we can be saved.

Mary and Joseph celebrated the birth of their son, Jesus, but others too would recognize that he was their long awaited Messiah. God’s plan for redeeming his people from sin was now before them and they responded in praise. As his people today, we declare our Messiah’s arrival and bow to him in adoration and praise. The light of the world has come, and salvation is available to all who would believe.

The birth of Jesus Christ may have gone unnoticed in the world’s eyes, but angels declared the arrival of the Savior to shepherds keeping watch over their flock by night. Jesus our Messiah was born in Bethlehem and is good news of great joy for all people! Like those shepherds of old, we seek to glorify and praise God for all that he has done, and while we remember that our Savior has come, we by faith believe he will one day return.

Unlike Mary, who had demonstrated tremendous faith, the priest Zechariah had initially doubted what God was able to do. Upon the birth of his son who would become John the Baptist, Zechariah embraces the vision of the Lord and declares in faith all that God will accomplish. We too may have in our past instances of doubt, but like Zechariah, need proudly proclaim the work and glory of God today.

Though young and insignificant in the world’s eyes, Mary had been chosen by God to carry his Son into the world. Mary rejoices in God’s marvelous work and in faith declares her trust in a beautiful song of praise. While we may be considered insignificant in the world’s estimation, we need to declare our faith and trust in him, confident that he will accomplish all that he has said he will do. The long awaited Messiah was about to enter the world. It would not be to kings and kingdoms that he would arrive, but instead to a humble virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph. Mary’s faith and willingness to be used of the Lord has for centuries stood as an example of what our response to our Lord should be and encourage us all to say, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

At Mount Sinai, the Lord was to come down in the sight of all the people. It was a terrifying event when the Lord descended, and the Israelites needed to ensure they followed all of the Lord’s commands. The ancient Israelites who experienced that day could never have imagined that God would one day come down in the person of Jesus. While it may seem far off, we need always remember that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will one day return for his own.

The Israelites arrive at Mount Sinai and the Lord calls them to recall all he had done for them and promises, should they choose to obey, to make them a treasured possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Though we are removed by thousands of years, we too are left with a decision as to whether or not we will trust God at his word in the days he has given us. When his father-in-law, Jethro, saw all that Moses was attempting to do he encouraged him to enlist others to help him with the work. We too are not called to be lone rangers in the faith but to rely on and depend upon the body of Christ to accomplish the work to which he has called us. When the challenges of this life tempt us to despair, we need to remember that God can use our example in the lives of others. We may think that our struggles are for no purpose, but they could be the very thing that draws another to faith. The Israelites faith had been stretched by the apparent lack of physical provision but now they faced a physical enemy in the attacking Amalekites. God, however, would through Moses bring victory for his people. This episode is a striking reminder of who fights for us and our need for others to encourage us in the spiritual battle in which we are engaged. When the Israelites complain for a third time, even Moses grows frustrated and begins to fear for his life. Even when our circumstances may seem to indicate otherwise, we must always be confident in God’s abiding presence with us and not doubt his love and concern. God can provide for us in the most miraculous of ways; we need only keep our eyes upon him. As the journey grew difficult the Israelites minds went back to Egypt. They complained to Moses and Aaron and doubted God’s concern for them. God, however, was about to show them his miraculous provision and stretch their faith to trust in his care. When we are tempted to doubt, we need to recall that he who did not spare his own Son will graciously give us all that we need. Despite God’s miraculous provision for them thus far, when faced with an apparent water shortage, the Israelites again begin to doubt and complain to Moses. We too can suffer from a short memory and need to remind one another that God’s presence is enough for all the trials and difficulties that we may face and that our heavenly Father knows what we need before we ask him.

After God’s miraculous deliverance, Moses is moved to singing in response. Our God is a God of victory, power, love and hope, and the songs we sing remind us of who he is and what he has done on our behalf. We sing not to fill time in a worship service, but to declare his goodness and remind one another of his finished work and our future hope.
