  • Bringing Detroit And Toledo Together Through DETxTOL

    08/10/2017 Duración: 06min

There's a guy looking to build more connections between Detroit and Toledo than the Mudhens and the Tigers baseball teams. That guy is Mark Pannell, and his event series is called "DETxTOL." Both places are experiencing a refocus on place-based entrepreneurship. That means starting businesses that benefit and serve a geographic place and also provide jobs in that place. The goal is open dialogue and create connections between the two cities that are an hour and a half apart but share some of the same challenge, especially when it comes to starting a business and entrepreneurship. We chatted about the free event and what the goals are and why should you should come October 17. Here's the panel: Alicia Wagner - Co-Owner, Fowl and Fodder (http://fowlandfodder.com/) Dante Williams - Founder, Cutz Lounge (http://cutzlounge.us/) Prakash Karamchandani - Co-Founder, Balance Pan-Asian Grille (http://balancegrille.com/) Joanna Dueweke - Program Manager, ProsperUS Detroit (http://prosperusdetroit.org/) Moderated by M

  • Reflecting On Our "On The Table" Experiences Discussing Detroit

    05/10/2017 Duración: 30min

I know that a discussion about a discussion can be kind of meta, but the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan put together a very interesting series of conversations across the region about youth. "On The Table" is a project bringing 400 conversations together, over meals, across the seven county Detroit area.  We attended three of them. Shianne at Noble Elementary/Middle, Jer at Bamboo Detroit, and Sven at the Detroit Boxing Gym. So we initially were going to do a short roundup with some of the Daily team - Jer, Shianne and Sven - but it turned into a half-hour wide-ranging discussion of issues facing the city and youth, and some of the real challenges that are out there. Apologies since is longer than our usual episode, but we hope you enjoy it.

    03/10/2017 Duración: 12min

The HuffPost, formerly known as the Huffington Post, was in Campus Martius in Detroit capturing stories from Detroiters as part of their Listen To America Tour. They're visiting 25 cities across the heartland of the country to get a beat on what people actually care about. It's an interesting experiment in outreach. So we talked Editor to Editor, with Jer having a conversation with Jo Confino. At HuffPost, Confino is Editor of Impact & Innovation and Editorial Director of their solutions journalism project, What's Working. We get into the challenges of solutions journalism - how it's harder than chasing down the crime stories of the day, and it's not always about positive stories. Also, breaking down the mental barriers that some journalists have. Apologies ahead of time for a little wind noise. We recorded on location for this one.  If you like the show, subscribe on Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/daily-detroit-news-byte/id1220563942?mt=2 Also, thanks to our network, Podcast Detroit:
