In your author journey, it is easy to view yourself as the hero. You’ve worked hard on your writing, books, and marketing. You’ve conquered emotional obstacles. You’ve proven to yourself that you can do it. All of those are heroic acts, to be sure, but it may surprise you to learn that in your author story, you are not the hero. You are not the main character. You are not whom the story is about. Remember the 1980’s movie “Field of Dreams” with Kevin Costner? He plays a farmer who is roaming out in his field one day, and he hears a voice. “Build it and he will come.” He has no idea what the voice means until he starts taking action and listening to the subsequent messages the voice gives him. The idea of “build it and they will come” makes for a compelling movie, but it’s not true in the real world. People don’t show up just because you build something. Rather, people show up when they are interested or when they will receive something helpful or entertaining. Everybody knows mental health is important, and we see lots of signs of depression, burnout, frustration, anger, and even increasing rates of suicide in society. The greatest superhero movie ever made is 2008’s The Dark Knight. The movie is admired for many reasons, the biggest of which is Heath Ledger’s amazing performance as Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker. But one of the most underrated aspects of the film is Aaron Eckhart’s portrayal of Harvey Dent, the Gotham City District Attorney. One of the most fascinating aspects of being a writer is that lots of people are eager to give you advice. In fact, there is a giant industry of books, conferences, retreats, coaching, and podcasts (this being one of them!) devoted to giving you writing advice. However, be careful who you’re listening to. There is a whole group of people who are eager to give advice about writing and book marketing but have not actually accomplished much. Picture this: You are the co-author of an enormously successful business book series. You want to write another book in the series, but it’s on a very different topic than the others. You also want to write it with your wife, instead of your original co-author. And, by the way, you’re also going to use a different publisher than the original series. Sounds like a challenge you would back away from? To most people, yes… but not for John David Mann! The series I’m talking about is the ultra-successful Go-Giver book series that began with 2008’s The Go-Giver book. The series was an enormous success, and it also happens to be one of my favorite books of all time. John David Mann and his co-author, Bob Burg, impacted countless lives with those books.
