    Alice Backer of www.kiskeacity.com welcomes guest Manbo Dowoti Désir.   Dowoti Désir is a Manbo Asogwe and a scholar of Haitian Vodou.  She utilizes interfaith exchanges and cultural diplomacy to facilitate better understanding of AfroAtlantic spiritual systems in the global North. She has written extensively about the contemporary and sacred arts of the African Diaspora, its religions and sociopolitical issues impacting the global African community. Her book, Wòch case wòch: Redlining a Holocaust, Memorials and the People of the AfroAtlantic, focusing on the right to memory, the built environment, and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, will be available in 2014. She is a graduate of Barnard College and has a Master's degree from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

    Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Onel Mulet has performed with a roster of legendary artists including Santos Colon, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez and Celia Cruz as well as internationally renown artists Johnny Pacheco, Bobby Valentin, Ismael Miranda, Larry Harlow, Bobby Cruz, Jose Luis Rodriguez "El Puma", Israel Sardiña of Los Van Van, Arturo Sandoval,Malena Burke, Carlos "Patato" Valdes as well as the notable Cuban Troubadour Pedro Luis Ferrer, and NY-based Grammy nominated artists, David Oquendo and Roman Diaz. Born and reared in Miami, of Cuban heritage, Onels musical environment was anchored by the music of his parents, Cuban masters, and richly influenced by the diversity of American music including Motown, funk, old school Rhythm & Blues, classical music and jazz greats, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Paquito DíRivera and John Coltrane. A graduate of the New World School of the Arts in Florida, he quickly became part of the local Miami music scene.

    Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing. While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow.  It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam.     Host Alice Backer of www.kiskeacity.com welcomes guest Wynnie Lamour. Wynnie Lamour is the founder of the Haitian Creole Institute of NYC. She is an educator with a focus on Language & Communication. She has spent the last several years teaching Haitian Creole in the New York City metro area to a wide array of language learners. Her experiences growing up in Brooklyn as a Haitian-American have provided her with equal comfort in both cultures and languages. Wynnie has a BA in Linguistics from Cornell University and an MA in Urban Affairs from CUNY Queens College. Wynnie's philosophy of teaching is rooted in the idea of "Mindfulness", which promotes community and connectedness, while establishing a sense of pride and respect for both the Haitian language and culture. Wynnie's most recent work includes a translation of an excerpt of the Franketienne novel "Dezafi" published May 2013 by Transition Magazine (Issue 111 "New Narratives of Haiti"), a publication of the W.
