St. Bonaventure University journalism students discuss “Baseball, Blogging and Beat Reporting: Using a Spring Training Blog to Teach Journalism Students How to Cover a Beat,” a presentation they made at the Mid-Atantic Popular and American Culture Conference in Philadelphia. Anne and Richard Lee, faculty members in the university’s Jandoli School of Communication and the co-editors of TAPinto Greater Olean, use the blog in their classes as a tool to teach students how to cover a beat. The four students taking part in the podcast – Kelly Haberstroh, M.K. Killen, Lucas Sperduti and Jordan Vollmer – all worked on the blog in the Lees’ classes. Students, faculty, alumni and friends of the Jandoli School of Communication launched a video project Friday to stress the value of journalism. For the project, participants recorded short videos in which they answered the question "Why am I a journalist?" For a news report about New York State's new Excelsior Scholarship program, TAPinto reporters requested emails from state and local lawmakers, as well as area school officials.

St. Bonaventure University journalism graduates Chris LaPlaca and Mike Vaccaro discuss the importance of facts in sports reporting with TAPinto Greater Olean's Taylor Walker. Laplaca, senior vice president of corporate communications for ESPN, and Vaccaro, a New York Post sports columnist, are on campus for the school's sports symposium.

In our April 4 podcast, Congressman Charles Melancon (D-LA, 2005-2011) and Congressman Steven Kuykendall (R-CA, 1999-2001) discuss their experiences at St. Bonaventure University and how coverage of governmental politics has shifted in recent years. The two are visiting as a part of the Congress to Campus program, in which bipartisan pairs travel to college campuses across the country and around the world to facilitate discussions on the importance of Congress and to encourage young citizens to become involved in public service and their government.
