Episodios

  • The First Gospel Sermon, Pt. 2- “Both LORD and Messiah": Acts 2:22-36

    12/02/2017 Duración: 32min

In this sermon, we dig into the core of Peter's first Gospel sermon, which is an early version of the Kerygma (the foundational teachings of the Apostles for evangelism and defense of the faith). We explore Peter's arguments about the historical nature of Jesus' life, death, resurrection and glorification; the use of the Psalms to indicate someone greater than David; God's plan for salvation; and the dangerous climax of it all- that "God has made Jesus to be both Lord and Messiah."We also take a brief moment to embarrass Chris' wife by discussing her experience with childbirth, but that'll make sense in context. Maybe.

  • The First Gospel Sermon, Pt 1- Wonders & Signs: Acts 2:13-21

    05/02/2017 Duración: 32min

First words are important. In Acts 2, we are given the first words of the baby Church, as Peter gives the first sermon under the influence of the Holy Spirit (and nothing else!). He begins his first words by quoting some old words from the prophet Joel.In this sermon, we explore Joel's and Peter's words about the Last Days. We learn about the signs, wonders, and miracles that signal these last days: the pouring out of the Holy Spirit; prophesying from men and women; terrifying natural phenomena; dreams and visions; and the Gospel going out to ALL people. This will set the stage for Peter to introduce Jesus to his audience in parts 2 and 3 of this mini-sermon series.Through all this, we will see how everything that is prophesied is for the glory of Jesus' Name, the Name through which salvation comes to all.We also have a Greek vocabulary test, and everyone fails miserably. STUDY HARDER, CLASS.

  • Lots to Say: Acts 2:1-12

    30/01/2017 Duración: 32min

The Holy Spirit arrives! ...and Chris has lots to say about it.We examine 6 various topics (Pentecost, Wind, Fire, Galileans, Glossolalia, and the Foreign Faithful), and though these seemingly unrelated topics may appear disconnected at first glance, they are actually all saying the same thing (just like the apostles on Pentecost). Listen to find out what that one crucial thing might be. (Hint: it rhymes with "The Flory of Nod")Also: my sincere apologies to the good people of Newfoundland. You'll know why when you listen. Plus, we dive into the Palestinian barley harvesting cycle, because Kristy is a bit of a farm nerd. Just like Chris is a word nerd. GLOSSOLALIA!

  • ...Sound Familiar? Acts 1:9-26

    22/01/2017 Duración: 35min

In the lull between Jesus' ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit, we have two simple stories; angels appear to the 12, and then they must choose a replacement for Judas. However, in these simple stories are familiar elements which bring profound new depths to their simplicity. We examine the Apostles looking in the wrong place; fancy new Bible words like Shekinah and Parousia; the significance of clouds, angels, and "Men of Galilee"; a ridiculous roll call of the apostles; the importance of women to Jesus' ministry; and Peter's cherrypicking of verses from the Psalms. It's a lot, and most of it is familiar. But there is profoundness in the familiar!

  • Breaking Ground: Acts 1:1-8

    15/01/2017 Duración: 27min

I've always considered groundbreaking ceremonies to be a little preposterous. As we read the last words of Jesus to His Apostles, I think we'll see that, in the case of the Great Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Church, the Boss has a plan. And as always, the Boss is willing to get His hands dirty. We examine the nature of Power in the Kingdom, and find that the Church represents a reshaping of humanity. I also compare Trump to Ronald McDonald. Hard-hitting theology for sure.

  • Introducing Acts: Church Like a Flame

    08/01/2017 Duración: 41min

In this introductory sermon, we examine the "W" Questions of Acts: Who wrote it, Why was it written, When was it written, Who is in this book, and (most importantly), What is this book about. We also explore the basic structure of Acts, as well as its Four Dominant Themes: The Holy Spirit, Evangelism, Community and Oppression.Chris also gets mocked for his choice of slideshow artwork. That's fun.
