In this episode we focus on soils. After the recent wet weather, it has made getting crops into the ground almost impossible. Managing soils in this condition requires planning and coordination before during and after major weather events. We will hear from two soil experts, both who have spoken at recent Monitor Farm events.  Philip Wright from Wrights Resolutions Ltd has been working on our new Cultivations Guide. Philip will give his views on what we should be thinking about now with soils being so wet. Especially during current times with uncertainty looming over us, it is vital growers and farmers need to consider methods in cutting down on resources and business costs.  Experts at the NFU have been working with the GrowSave project and working closely with growers and farmers to reduce energy costs. “As delegates gather in London for the annual Grain Market Outlook Conference today, David Eudall and Peter Collier of AHDB’s Market Intelligence sit down to review the latest market data.   David and Peter discuss global issues, with lower prices resulting from trade surpluses meaning plenty of export competition for cereals. In this episode, Danny Fanning, a Masters student from University College Dublin spent a two month placement at AHDB looking at Herbal Leys. During this time he spoke to Ian Wilkinson of Costwolds seeds about his farming practices and how he manages his herbal lays. * Please note this episode was filmed outside, so in parts it can be quite windy! Ben Stroud’s family farm in Leicestershire incorporates a 190 dairy cow herd, 140 hectares of arable crops and 80 hectares of forage and grazing. The farm grows Lucerne as a cheaper source of protein for the dairy cows, which is also helping to control blackgrass. With plenty of muck and slurry produced by the cows and youngstock, making use of this on both forage land and crops is important for both soil biology and cutting input costs.    AHDB’s Tom Hebbert met with Ben to discover more about the benefits of growing Lucerne, and to discover how arable farmers can also benefit by working alongside a local dairy farmer. Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus was reported in the UK this year for the first time.   The Consumer Insight conference has taken place in Warwick. About 150 delegates packed a conference venue  to hear from a range of speakers about changing diets, eating habits, the so called shopper journey and how retailers can adapt to attract shoppers of the future.   Delegates heard about the value of consumer data. Sarah Pick, Knowledge Exchange Manager for AHDB, speaks to Nick Gibbon of Belmont Farm and Equine Vets about calf rearing and how to offset the risk of pneumonia. Nick facilitates a discussion group funded by AHDB, consisting of seven meadow quality calf rearers who have been collecting data over the past 18 months on the calf’s performance and health treatments they received.
