    Listen to this fascinating commentary by Robert Eruera, Poukokiri Taonga Tuku Iho Maori, who delved into the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collection and selected a letter that was written by a Tainui rangatira, Rewi Maniapoto to the government of the day. Robert talks about how in these letters, Rewi uses the symbols of Matariki to assert rangatiratanga (self-determination) and mana by way of the written word from one “tihi maunga” (chief) Rewi to another “tihi maunga” (chief) government. Waitui Ātea highlights the people of the Saltwater Realm, defined as the Pacific region. The exhibition conveys their rich culture embellished with custom and costume; their language articulated in stories and relayed in chants, songs, dance and music; and their saltwater homelands portrayed in images and brought alive by the saltwater communities that call Aotearoa home. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to experience rare and unique items from Auckland Libraries’ Heritage Collection

  • Michael Belgrave - The New Zealand Wars: memory over time

    Michael Belgrave joined Massey University in 1993 on the opening of the university’s Albany campus. A historian and previously a research manager at the Waitangi Tribunal, he taught in the social policy and social work programme until 2014, as well as Māori studies and history. More recently, he has been heavily involved in assisting iwi in negotiating the historical aspects of Treaty settlements. He has published widely on Treaty and Māori history, including being lead editor of Waitangi Revisited: Perspectives on the Treaty of Waitangi (Oxford University Press).
