Independence Day is the day the Israel Prize is handed out. This year’s recipient of the Israel Prize for Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation is being awarded to Eyal Waldman. One of the leading entrepreneurs in Israel, he was the founder of Mellanox, which produces components for high speed communication networks.  Waldman has been a harsh critic of the government and even more so since his daughter Danielle was murdered at the massacre at the Nova Party on October 7th. Education Minister Yoav Kish tried to keep the prize from Waldman, but he pushed ahead to receive the award. He spoke with reporter Arieh O’Sullivan about his efforts and his vision for Israel. In her book, "Be Careful What You Wish For," author Michal Zohar Ben-Dor explores the question "what if." In this case, the question is what if a deceased loved one were alive. The seed for the story draws from the author's own life. Her father died in an accident during his IDF reserve service when she was 14 years old. The organization Our Brothers was founded by and for bereaved siblings. Its activities throughout the year provide support frameworks to the siblings, and engage in projects and initiatives to honor the memories of their loved ones. Relationships are often forged across different generations of loss within the community. A recent commemorative song project involving bereaved siblings of fallen soldiers from the 1973 Yom Kippur war connected with the experience of brothers and sisters whose siblings fell in the ongoing Iron Swords war. US President Biden said that if Israel were to launch a large-scale incursion into Rafah, the United States would stop sending it weapons. Israel shut down Al Jazeera's  operations in the country and seized some of its communication equipment Sunday, prompting condemnation from the United Nations and rights groups over alleged moves by the government to restrict press freedoms. The Qatari-based news network called the closure of its offices a “criminal act,” while critics said the move was a “dark day for democracy” and that it sets a concerning precedent for other international media outlets operating in Israel.  The  Ministry of Communications said Sunday it had closed the network’s Jerusalem offices, and confiscated its communication equipment. “In addition, the network’s broadcasts on cable and satellite were stopped, and access to its websites was blocked,” the ministry said.
