  This week we revisit our conversation with Gary Swart. Gary is a General Partner with Polaris Partners and until April 2014 he was the CEO of oDesk  (now UpWork, NASDAQ; UPWK). Gary is a thought leader in entrepreneurship; how best to hire and manage teams; and the future of work, including online work.  

  In this week’s episode, we revisit our interview with Karen Long, a Managing Director at KCK (Med Tech) Group. KCK focuses on capital investment in commercial and growth-stage medical device companies. Karen has been with KCK since January 2018, when she joined as Executive-in-Residence. Karen serves as Board Director in many KCK portfolio companies as well as Independently. Karen has been a President and CEO prior to KCK Medical.

In this episode, we revisit our conversation with Ross Jaffe, MD. Ross is an experienced healthcare venture capitalist, and Ross is one of the founding Managing Directors of Versant Ventures. He now serves as a Venture Advisor to New Enterprise Associates (NEA) while completing his Versant responsibilities. Ross has been recognized on the Forbes Midas List of leading venture capitalists. Ross has a BA from Dartmouth, an MD from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

This week we interview Stacey Porter who is the Chief People Officer at Outset Medical. Stacey has expertise in organizational design, innovative talent practices, and employee engagement.  Prior to Outset, she was the Head of Global Talent Development for Intuitive Surgical, Inc., responsible for designing performance and succession practices, while developing leaders and high-performing teams. Stacey has held leadership roles at VMware and Roche, and has built a career on creating nimble, progressive organizations. She has a MSW and doctoral studies in industrial/organizational psychology.

  This week we interview Steven Kwast who is the Chief Global Officer (CGO) and President of Genesis Systems. He is a retired Air Force General who has spent his lifetime understanding the art of peaceful International affairs and national security strategies. He was raised in a remote African tribe and is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in astronautical engineering. He holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He has extensive experience in recruiting, education, training and developing the work force for the US Air Force. He was the University President for the Air Force’s University (Air University) in Montgomery Alabama. He is a combat seasoned fighter pilot with extensive command experience at every level in the US Air Force. He authored the "Fast Space" study that puts forward a plan to develop the economic and national security power of Space for 21st century challenges.

This week we interview Renee Ryan, CEO of Cala. Renee has 25 years of building category-creating healthcare companies. Before joining Cala as CEO in August 2019, she led Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJDC) on the West Coast and the Asia Pacific for eight years. While at J&J, she made over 15 new investments, including the Series A for Cala Health. Previously, she was a healthcare investment banker at RW Baird, Jefferies, and Goldman Sachs.  Renee currently sits on the boards of Cala, Neuropace, and RefleXion Medical.

This week we interview Dr. Mark Shrime, who is O’Brien Chair of Global Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a Lecturer in Global Health and Social Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. Mark has written a new book Solving for Why: A Surgeon’s Journey to Discover the Transformative Power of Purpose. Mark is a longtime staff surgeon volunteer with Mercy Ships in sub-Saharan Africa. He received his MD from the University of Texas and received his Ph.D. in health policy from Harvard University, with a concentration in decision science. When not working, he is an avid photographer and rock climber and has competed on Seasons 8, 9, and 11 of American Ninja Warrior.

This week we interview John Houston.
