Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is planning to take the Big Oil industry to court over the environmental and economic damages climate change is causing the state of Michigan. This announcement comes on the heels of several tornado touchdowns in the southwestern portion of the state. It also happens after a U.S. Senate report detailed how the American Gas Industry is fighting to weaken energy efficiency rules.  And, we learned how Dear Leader is promising Big Oil if they hand-over a billion dollars to his campaign, then he'll scrap all of President Biden's environmental protections.  Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com

  • 121: The Tide is Turning! Ottawa County Progressive Joe Spaulding

    09/05/2024 Duración: 44min

Here's Episode 85 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! They did it! Delta County voters sent pink slips to three extreme Christian Nationalist MAGA county commissioners in recall races this week! This is an area that's recently turned from blue to red, which is why that extreme brand of right-wing politics gained a hold of the county board. But after just one year in power, the people rejected that kind of extremism in their community, and voted for all three recall challengers this week, including good friend of the podcast, Democrat Kelli Van Ginhoven! Congrats, Kelli! But there was another major victory which is equally sending shockwaves across the state of Michigan.  Right-wing Christian Nationalist Lucy Ebel lost her seat in humiliating fashion to Democrat Christian Kleinjans in the Second District of the Ottawa County Board! It was a shot across the bow of the right-wing Ottawa Impact majority, which, like the MAGA majority on the Delta board, created nothing but cruelty and chaos on their c

#Michigan #Politics #Progressives #Law #MichiganRepublicans #Republicans #ChristianNationalism #DanaNessel #MAGA #LeftofLansing #Podcast Here's the Left of Lansing Monday Musing for May 6, 2024 Former Michigan Republican Lee Chatfield, and his wife, Stephanie, pled not guilty to running a criminal enterprise, which includes numerous embezzlement and conspiracy charges.  Yet, despite facing those charges, and also accusations made by his sister-in-law that Lee sexually assaulted her for a decade (starting back when she was 14 or 15 years old), the judge in the case allowed the Chatfields to attend the Kentucky Derby last weekend! They were doing a little vacationing down there while also doing consulting work. It's another example of a two-tiered justice system. And, who wants to do business with those people? • 119: Friday Short: Why I'm Voting For Biden

    03/05/2024 Duración: 04min

#Michigan #Biden #SCOTUS #Politics #Progressives #Podcast #LeftofLansing Here's the Left of Lansing "Friday Short" for May 3, 2024. Generation Z voters are protesting at college campuses across the country, showing their dissatisfaction and disdain for the United States' continued backing of the right-wing Israeli government.  And for some, refusing to vote for a second Biden Administration term this November is their way of voicing their ultimate displeasure. For me, I'm equally outraged by the right-wing Israeli government, and I wish the President Biden would change course on our funding of that government.  But as for this November, I will cast my vote for Biden again because the good still outweighs the bad.  I detail my reasonsings in the "Friday Short." • 118: Building a Blue Foundation in the Upper Peninsula w/ Kelli van Ginhoven

    02/05/2024 Duración: 49min

Here's Episode 84 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! One reason I started this venture is that I wanted to help show the importance of local and state politics. For sure, progressives have made some outstanding strides in terms of state politics with Democrats taking the state trifecta last year for the first time in four decades! But on the local political side, the right-wing has enjoyed some victories on that side. However, that appears to be changing, though, because we've got some big time local recalls happening in different parts of Michigan next week! There's a recall election happening where an extreme right-wing Ottawa Impact commissioner on the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is facing a challenger on May 7th. And in Upper Peninsula's Delta County, the people were able to get recall elections in place for three right-wing county commissioners. Those elections also take place on May 7th. One of those challengers returns on the podcast to talk about race. Kelli Van Ginhoven is taking-o

  • 117: Episode 83: Salon's Amanda Marcotte on Fascism & The Christian Nationalist Movement

    25/04/2024 Duración: 48min

Here's episode 83 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Salon columnist Amanda Marcotte spends a few minutes talking with Pat about the Christian Nationalist Movement, and its ultimate goal of not just getting Dear Leader Trump back into power, but of ending religious freedom for all. Ms. Marcotte's written extensively on how Christian Nationalists are trying to defund public schools, public libraries, attacking the nation's democratic institutions, attacking abortion rights and women's health care, and also how this movement really is trying to end religious liberty in this country. And they'll do it through violence if need be. Ms. Marcotte also has a newsletter called, "Standing Room Only." So, please, subscribe to her newsletter! And thank you to Amanda for being on this week! The opening segment discusses how Dear Leader is once again visiting Michigan next week, but it doesn't appear he'll show his supposed support for union workers by speaking at a non-union business this time! No, he's a bit l

  • 116: Friday Short: Investing in People Really Works! April 19, 2024

    19/04/2024 Duración: 05min

Here's this week's LoL Friday Short for this April 19, 2024 There's hope new legislation could be introduced in Lansing called The Working Parents Tax Credit. If passed, it could help around 250,000 Michigan kids in just one year.  Supporters say this tax credit would incentivize work, and reward working families, and recent polling shows widespread support for this proposal. However, as we saw with the federal child tax credit in 2021, not only did the program cut child poverty in half, but unemployment dropped to record lows.  That's why the Rx Kids Flint program is something to watch when it comes to investing in our kids' futures.  It makes more sense investing in people rather than just handing-out millions upon millions of dollars in corporate subsidies, or slashing taxes for the rich, don't you think? Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com

  • 115: Episode 82: Transforming the Social Contract with Rx Kids in Flint

    18/04/2024 Duración: 43min

Here's Episode 82 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! It's another week.  That means it's another episode of the Republican Crime Syndicate! Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel announced several charges against former Michigan Republican state House Speaker Lee Chatfield, and his wife, Stephanie, for operating a criminal enterprise! Just like Chatfield's hero, Dear Leader Trump, he will soon find himself in a courtroom. And Chatfield also finds himself following in the footsteps of fellow Republican state House Speaker, Rick Johnson!  This is the Law & Order party? But while some policymakers work on finding ways to enrich themselves, there are many Michiganders working hard to enrich the lives of others.  One good example is the Rx Kids program in Flint, which provides a no-strings attached cash allowances to mothers and their babies. Other countries have provided similar programs, and experienced success with fewer premature births, improved cognitive development for infants, and more.

  • 114: Friday Short: Making Michigan Charter Schools Accountable Is Long Overdue

    12/04/2024 Duración: 04min

Here's this week's LoL "Friday Short" for this April 12, 2024. The Michigan Board of Education passed a resolution this week asking the Democratic majority in the state legislature to pass laws requiring more transparency and accountability when it comes to charter schools.  For years, charter schools haven't had to play by the same rules as public schools when it comes to accountability, even though charter schools receive taxpayer money! This resolution is a start of a movement that should've started long ago, and let's hope Michigan Democrats indeed pass legislation holding these institutions to the same standards as we hold our public schools.  But school choicers don't want that kind of accountability because it'll hurt their ultimate goal: defunding public schools!  Read the articles below for more info. Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com NOTES:  "State Board of Education resolution seeks grea

  • 113: Episode 81: Don't Believe the Hype on Corporate Subsidies w/ Bridge Magazine's Paula Gardner

    11/04/2024 Duración: 41min

Here's Episode 81 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! On this week's episode, Pat talks about "Florida" Mike Rogers' audacity to run for Michigan's open Senate seat this Fall even though he hasn't lived in this state for years (because he wanted to make lobbying cash), and he's registered to vote in both Florida and Michigan! How can a guy, who didn't even know about the abortion rights proposal, which passed in 2022, portray himself as a true Michigander? Pat would like to know. Pat also congratulates friend of the podcast, Democratic State Rep. Betsy Coffia, on her hard work passing a law which allows Michiganders ages 16-to-17-and-a-half years old to pre-register to vote. That law is in effect, and now, those Michiganders can pre-register by going online using a driver's license or state ID, or they can pre-register in-person by visiting their local clerk's office. Again, Democrats work to engage more people to take part in our democracy, and to make voting more accessible.  Then, Pat talks with

  • 112: Episode 80: Michigan Republicans Shill For Fascism in Grand Rapids

    04/04/2024 Duración: 35min

Here's Episode 80 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! This week, Pat takes the Michigan Republicans to task, and the handful of right-wing Michigan sheriffs, who stood on stage with Donald Trump this week in Grand Rapids. Trump showed-up in our state to exploit the death of Ruby Garcia, who was shot and killed by someone she knew. The alleged killer is an illegal immigrant, and that's all Trump wanted to focus on. No, he didn't address domestic violence, which is exactly what this is! No, he didn't address gun violence. And even though Trump said he talked with the victim's family, the family said he didn't talk to any family member! Plus, Trump didn't want to remind everyone how he torpedoed the Republican immigration bill in D.C.! It was about stoking anger and fear to his base while offering NO solutions.  And shame on all of those sheriffs for being part of this political rally, filled with racism and lies.  In the "Last Call," Pat takes a Lansing columnist to task for declaring that abortion ri

  • 111: Friday Short: The Maddocks are an embarrassment to Michigan

    29/03/2024 Duración: 04min

Time for the LoL "Friday Short" on this March 29, 2024 Michigan Republican State Rep. Matt Maddock baselessly claimed on "X" that buses at Detroit Metro Airport were filled with "illegal invaders!" The only problem with such a claim? The people in those buses were members of the Gonzaga Men's Basketball Team, which is playing in the Sweet 16 of the men's college tournament in Detroit this weekend.  Maddock refuses to admit his lie, and has doubled and tripled-down on the lie.  He and his wife attended a rally at the January 6th insurrection, and Meshawn Maddock is one of the 16 indicted Republican officials who tried to overturn the election for Donald Trump in 2020. And these are the people Rick Snyder and his friends in the donor class want back in power in the state House next year! • 110: Episode 79: Time for Transformational Change w/ Lou Glazer of Michigan Future, Inc.

    28/03/2024 Duración: 45min

It's episode 79 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast with the award-winning Pat Johnston! Pat's guest this week is Lou Glazer from Michigan Future, Inc., which is a nonprofit, and nonpartisan organization that focuses on helping Michigan succeed in a knowledge-based economy. And as Lou says, Michigan Future is also trying to make Michigan a more prosperous state. Michigan currently ranks 39th in per capita income. Lou says transformational changes are needed to make the state a more prosperous state, and a more attractive state, for younger people and younger families. Those changes include more investments in education, our cities and towns, and transit.  Pat opens the show talking about the cynical game the right-wing continues to play when it comes to dividing this country through race. He talks about how many on the right, including members of the Michigan Republican Party, continue to stoke fears over immigration. It's an issue that could've been tackled this year, but Congressional Republicans tr

  • 109: Friday Short: Shutting Down Line 5 Is A States' Rights Issue, Too

    22/03/2024 Duración: 04min

Here's this week's Left of Lansing "Friday Short." Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office argued in a federal appellate court that the fight to shut down the Line 5 oil pipeline belongs in a state court, and not in federal court.  Enbridge, which owns the pipeline, argues that due to U.S.-Canadian treaty from 1977 means the battle ought to remain in federal court.  But why isn't the Michigan Republican Party joining in Nessel's effort to protect Michigan's rights to protect herself against a foreign oil company? Republicans argue Texas has the right to protect its border, and their laws should override federal immigration laws due to "states' rights." Doesn't Michigan have the same right to protect itself from a Canadian oil company possibly doing economic and environmental harm to her? --Pat Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com

  • 108: Episode 78: Making a difference for Michiganders w/ Democratic State Rep. Ranjeev Puri

    21/03/2024 Duración: 43min

Welcome to Episode 78 of Michigan's Premier Progressive Podcast! Democratic State Representative, and House Majority Whip, Ranjeev Puri talks with Pat on a host of issues, including some key bills he helped pass the state legislature last year, such as gun safety, clean energy and climate bills, water filtration in schools and daycare centers, and more. They also talk about the importance of local and state elections. They also discuss the future of transit and mobility in the state, and how we can't just rely on cars for the future of transportation.  Pat's opening remarks cover how Republicans hardly helped pass some consequential legislation last year, including many of the bills Rep. Puri helped get to Gov. Whitmer's desk for her to sign into law. Pat calls-out his Republican state Senator, Roger Hauck, for voting against many of these crucial bills.  Pat's "Last Call" celebrates Democratic State Senator Sarah Anthony's bill to slash the APR for payday loans at 36%! The bill passed the Senate, and is o

  • 107: Friday Short: MI GOP Members Cry About Being Called Racists For Being...Racists

    15/03/2024 Duración: 04min

Here's this week's LoL Friday Short! Members of the Michigan Republican "Freedom Caucus" in the State House introduced a resolution to censure House Speaker Joe Tate. Tate, who became the state's first Black House Speaker last year, stripped state Rep. Josh Shriver of his committee assignments and staff after he re-posted tweets pushing the white supremacist "Great Replacement Theory." These right wing Freedom Caucus fellows argue it was wrong for Tate to punish Shriver, but they went further, claiming Tate's the actual racist because he championed some $10-million in spending for minority-owned small businesses and nonprofits.  The so-called party of "personal responsibility" is mad about being called racists after being exposed as racists! • 106: Episode 77: TikTok Ban, MAGA Violence, & Right Wing Cognitive Dissonance

    14/03/2024 Duración: 37min

Here's Episode 77 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Vote on this week's Left of Lansing Online Poll via Twitter or X: Does Social Media help or hurt the political process? On this week's show, Pat talks about how Alabama Republican Senator Katie Britt's ridiculous and disturbing State of the Union response showed how the White Christian Nationalist movement dominates the Republican Party. Pat compares her speech to that of Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's SOTU response in 2020, and the differences could not be starker. Even more, Britt's speech was designed to not just show how women "love kitchen," but it was designed to also stoke fear. That's a reliable aspect in the right wing playbook, and Pat explains how his time in right wing talk radio taught him how fear is vital in the right wing's propaganda strategy. Which then leads Pat to criticize Democrats in Congress for going along with Republicans to vote on banning TikTok. Democrats went along with the Republican xenophobic games to

  • 105: Friday Short: The White Christian Nationalist "Fundie Baby Voice"

    08/03/2024 Duración: 04min

We've made it to another Friday, which means it's time for another LoL Friday Short! I continue my examination into the different aspects of White Christian Nationalism by concentrating on Alabama Republican Senator Katie Britt's response to President Joe Biden's strong State Of The Union address this week.  Britt's breathy, high-pitch delivery is known as the "fundie baby voice," as explained by Missouri Dirt Road Democrat, and former Evangelical, Jess Piper.  And Republicans also made sure to place the 42-year old Britt in a kitchen during her response because that's where they believe women ultimately should be.  Compare the fundie baby voice of Senator Britt to the voice of strength and power of Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.  You tell me who not only represents the future of America, and the strong independence of women across the country, but also who appears more... normal.  And don't forget to check-out this week's Left of Lansing episode on the history of White Christian Nationalism

  • 104: Episode 76: The History of White Christian Nationalism w/ Dr. Sara Moslener

    07/03/2024 Duración: 45min

It's episode 76 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Lots of material in this week's episode, including Pat's examination of new Michigan GOP chair Pete Hoekstra's record as a former congressman, ambassador, Tea Party founder, Trump-backer, and lobbyist. Sure, Pete Hoekstra doesn't believe in demonic possession unlike his predecessor (at least, he hasn't publicly said he does) but there's no ideological daylight between Hoekstra and the now-ousted chair, Kristina Karamo. In fact, Pat has more information about Pete Hoekstra's past than he could talk about on the show this week. Click here for more! Then, Pat continues to delve into the White Christian Nationalist movement, which is taking over the Republican Party, both in Michigan, and across the country. And if Donald Trump wins this Fall, the Christian Nationalists will gain more power than we could ever imagine just a decade ago. Dr. Sara Moslener is a researcher, writer, and lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Anthropology, and Religion at

  • 103: Friday Short: GOP is All-In on National Abortion Ban
