Back in the day - if you’re a hunter gatherer, finding anything sweet would have been a treat, and this is the ‘an event or item that is out of the ordinary and gives great pleasure’ definition of ‘treat’ - not the ‘I bought another five-pound bag of’ definition. Finding sweet foods in the environment was hard, and often was only available during certain seasons - maybe some berries, a bit of honey - and you might have to fight off a bear and a swarm of bees to earn your sweet reward.
