Only last week we were telling you about a worrying downward trend in Irish manufacturing. Today we bring much better news this time in the services sector which is the largest component of the Irish economy. Speaking to Joe was Oliver Mangan the AIB chief economist.

Ireland’s largest fuel supplier is Certa - they used to be known as EMO and they’re part of the Irish listed conglomerate DCC. They supply petrol forecourts but also homes with kerosene and other home heating products. But now they’re looking at the post fossil fuel world of the future and have snapped up Alternative Energy Ireland as part of that transition. Speaking to Joe this morning was Andrew Graham, the Managing Director, Certa Ireland.

 The Bord Bia Bloom festival of food and gardening is underway in the Phoenix Park and will doubtless attract extra numbers as the sun shines all over the nation. Of course, it’s just as much about business as it is about the flowers and plants. There’s also a business breakfast this morning with hundreds more food service providers and that will be steered by Jim O’Toole the chief executive of Bord Bia who spoke to Joe this morning on the show.

The US company Qualtrics said yesterday that it was making Dublin its head of business for EMEA. They specialise in something called Experience Management and they hope to add substantially more to the already 400 people employed in this country. Joining Joe this morning was Donnchadh Casey, the Chief commercial officer for Qualtrics.

How many discarded keyboards, mice, and clapped-out computer equipment does your company have lying in storage somewhere - waiting for some imaginary time when they’ll be used again? An Irish company Vyta is specialising in collecting and refurbishing eWaste and they’ve just announced a hiring spree to meet demand. Faye Thomas, CCO of Vyta joined Joe this morning on the show.

From tomorrow in Europe, the unified patent system will come into force. It means that innovators can submit a single application in order to protect or defend their inventions. It does away with a hodge podge system where patents had to be filed in many jurisdictions. The minister responsible in this area is Neale Richmond - the Minister of State for Business, Employment & Retail 

Last week the health minister signed off on plans to print enhanced health labels on every bottle of wine sold in Ireland. It means extra costs for some vineyards - especially smaller ones and might even mean they’ll stop selling in Ireland. That’s why some wine producers in Italy are taking a case to the World Trade Organisation and others are considering legal action for breaching the single market. Ignacio Sanchez Recarte is the Secretary General of the the Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins, which represents winemakers in Europe and joined Joe Lynam live from Brussels.

Europe is experiencing a hot war for the first time in decades, and it has rocked the politics and economics of the continent. Energy prices and inflation soared last year and have required governments to bail out companies and consumers. Inflation remains high though and the biggest country in the EU, Germany is officially in recession. Markus Breyer, the head of Business Europe, which represents the biggest companies in Europe joined Joe Lynam live from Brussels.

The event, which runs until June 1st, promises to put Dublin on the circular economy map internationally, highlighting and celebrating ground-breaking circular economic initiatives in Dublin, with venues spanning from the Mansion House to Croke Park. Minister Simon Coveney will be officially opening H&MV Engineering’s new global HQ in Limerick, this afternoon, where the company will announce its five-year expansion plan. PJ Flanagan, H&MV Engineering’s CEO told Emmet about their plans.
