Hopelessness is a common expression of the soul in our culture. The script we write in our hearts doesn’t always look hopeful. Not only does what we read on our news feeds often leave us feeling helpless, what we see going on in our lives leaves us feeling the same way. The psalmist reminds us time and time again that hardships are a part of life. We can’t escape pain. But we can cling to hope - a hope that in the middle of the mess there is a God who is faithful to walk with us. While we are on the roller coaster of life there are going to be times of great highs and significant lows. At each place we often need a reminder of who God is. In the good times it is a reminder we still need him and in the bad times it is a reminder that he is still with us. God is a communicating, conversational God. He loves to share His heart, direction and will with us. Most of the time He does this through actively speaking in a number of different ways. Ruth Haley Barton writes: “Discernment is much more than mere decision making; it is, first of all, a habit, a way of seeking that can permeate our whole life.” There are three habitual prayers reflecting a heart posture that help prepare us to hear from the LORD. Join us this week as Pastors Jeremy & Lisa seek to equip us to further tune in to the voice of Jesus in our everyday lives.

When it comes to hearing God’s voice and discerning his direction for our lives, our tendency is often to first look outward.  In other words, we are looking for some external information that we need to help make our lives work better.  However, as Ruth Haley Barton writes, “Discernment requires, first of all, that we are able to discern matters of our own heart.” Pastors Jeremy and Lisa invite us to consider how vital it is in seeking discernment from God that we engage an inward journey with Him and not just seek an outer experience from Him.

When I come to listen in prayer, how do I know if what I am ‘hearing’ is really God’s voice or just my own thoughts? Can we really grow in confidence that we are recognizing the Shepherd’s whispers? What does this inaudible voice of God sound like? In any relationship communication takes on various forms and styles.  The longer we are in a relationship the more likely we can pick up subtle cues and body language that say more than words ever could. So what about our relationship with God?
