  • Martial Arts & Your Life: The Story of Us - Lawrence A. Kane Interview Part II

    28/04/2022 Duración: 46min

The concluding part of my discussion with Lawrence Kane on the seminal book on martial arts subculture he authored with previous podcast guest, Kris Wilder. This episode we look more into the reasoning behind the questionnaire order that was used to collect data for this book on martial artists. Both Lawrence and I were surprised by much of the data was provided, demonstrating the real personalities behind individuals who stick with martial arts training.  Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksLawrence A. • Convince a Little Man

    13/03/2022 Duración: 27min

On this episode we look at peer pressure through the lens of fiction: how herd mentality or the need to fit in can influence otherwise rational and moral human beings to commit heinous crimes. Although all the references for this episode come from feature films, television programmes and literature, most are inspired by real events or are allegories for real events. Art can often offer a very helpful way to view ideas and the human condition. My desire with this piece is prompt thinking from a self-defence, defence of the self perspective. After all, self-protection should begin with mental self-protection. Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb Books Information on private lessons, seminars, webinars and the many different services offered by Clubb Chimera Martial Arts.

  • The Martial Art of Communication - Joe Saunders Interview

    04/03/2022 Duración: 01h11min

"Your pain in my heart" - It's not a likely quote to see flying around the self-protection subculture and industry, but when it comes to better managing potential violence such thinking makes a world of difference. On this episode Australia's Joe Saunders of the "Managing Violence" podcast discusses the role of empathy in de-escalation ahead of his international tour of England and Switzerland along with a range of other related subjects. We also delve into areas not commonly covered in self-protection circles such as dealing with violent relationships in the workplace, extended family and at home. I also got an opportunity to discuss a regular elephant in the room - the timidity of martial arts students. Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksJoe Saunders' "Managing Violence" Podcast and Services Information on private lessons, seminars, webinars and the many different servi

  • Their Bloody Valentine

    12/02/2022 Duración: 01h57min

It’s 5th February 1943 at the Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan. Sugar Ray Robinson enters the ring to face his latest opponent. Robinson has fought 40 professional bouts now, not losing one, and has been dazzling audiences since his amateur days. Tonight is a rematch.  The man standing across from the ring is Jake La Motta. The last time they met it he was described as a “human truck”. Robinson had won the match with what looked like relative ease on the scorecards and the audience had shown their approval. Giving away 10lbs, he had used his superior footwork and exemplified the art of boxing in the eyes of many. However, there were still others who betrayed they primal lust for the gladiatorial roots of pugilism. They saw no entertainment value in a fighter dancing outside of harm’s way. The real fight for them occurred in the pocket; the true test of warriors where the battle glory is earned. They asked what would happen if the truck caught up with the dancer.  Tonight they would find out. For this would

  • Coal for Jersey Joe (Part 1) (Christmas Episode)

    14/12/2021 Duración: 41min

In these special Christmas and New Year episodes I look at the Jersey Joe Walcott story. He is often considered one the most underrated heavyweight boxers in history. This is not another biography but a look into the background and conditions that made Walcott's fight to succeed so remarkable. We begin in December 1944 when the great fighter has given up on his dreams and look back at what created this situation. Shownotes/links: Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksTribute to the Man Who Didn't Quit Jersey Joe Walcott: A Boxing BiographyBoxing Biographies: Jersey Joe WalcottClose Encounters with the Gloves OffThe RingEast Side BoxingWho in the World is Arnold Cream?  Information on private lessons, seminars, webinars and the many different services offered by Clubb Chimera Martial Arts.

  • Martial Movie Massacre: The Final Chapter

    08/12/2021 Duración: 46min

This episode marks the conclusion of our annual martial movie massacre season. It might be the end of this particular tradition, depending on how the programming goes for next season and not to mention your all-important feedback. CCMA will be making some major steps forward with our provision of services in the New Year. I am still not entire sure what next year’s podcast theme will be, so again please let me know via the usual channels. From as long as I can remember, a proposed final instalment to a series was always an exciting prospect. Very few good movies, TV shows or other forms of media live up to expectations of their finale sequel or episode. Some of the best examples I think take the form of accidents. However, I am confident that you will enjoy the last Martial Movie Massacre. This show has some great guests, such as Iain Abernethy, Leigh Simms, Les Bubka, Chris Hanson and a piece written especially for the show by the great Gretchen Carlson.  There is much rule breaking in the show – in fact it

  • Martial Movie Massacre X (part one)

    27/11/2021 Duración: 42min

Martial Movie Massacre returns for the first part of its 10th episode anniversary. For three years we have presented a tradition of looking at the dramatic fiction medium - movies and sometimes TV - to discuss what we like and dislike about its martial art content. Having spent two years and six episodes going through tropes and cliches in this subgenre, this year I have asked several of my guests to offer their recommendations on not only underrated martial arts movies but also non-martial arts movies that martial artists should watch. Now, it is my turn. Here are my first five selection of 10 movies that meet this criteria. Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksMusicTecknoAxe - "Hero's Redemption"Infraction - Sport Music (No Copyright Music) Video Link: https://youtu.be/iEJ4yP9k1JIMob Battle by Silent Partner from YouTube Audio Library · http://bit.ly/32TUZyy Muay Thai — Woodwind Instrument Music for T

  • Season of the Witch Chapter Three (Halloween Episode)

    29/10/2021 Duración: 28min

Chapter Three concludes this year's Halloween show with a discussion on the impact created by irrational fears and the real problems at the root of those individuals who commit crimes in the name of antagonistic dieties. We then discuss how fear of witches, teenage violence and the development of occult magical practices can provide us with lessons in short-term self-protection, long-term self-protection and martial arts history.Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksMusic "Dark Spirits" by Our Music Box Information on private lessons, seminars, webinars and the many different services offered by Clubb Chimera Martial Arts.

  • Season of the Witch Chapter Two (Halloween Episode)

    27/10/2021 Duración: 29min

Chapter Two of our annual Halloween show continues on from the tragic teenage crime of the previous episode and looks further back into history.  Here we go through the philosophical and counter-cultural roots for the hysteria that became the Satanic Panic. Martial arts historians might start to note interesting parallels for the origin of invented traditions whilst self-protection teachers and students will see how bad assumptions can be dangerous in the hands of the learned. Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksMusic "Dark Spirits" by Our Music Box Information on private lessons, seminars, webinars and the many different services offered by Clubb Chimera Martial Arts.

  • Season of the Witch Chapter One (Halloween Episode)

    26/10/2021 Duración: 27min

Year four of our Halloween tradition takes a look at lessons to be learned from crimes associated with the occult and crimes caused by fear of the occult. There is much to unpack in relation to both self-protection and martial arts. Chapter One looks at the bored and wayward teenager Ricky Kasso from Northport, Long Island, who became addicted to drugs, praised Satan and committed murder. Shownotes/links: Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimera YouTubeClubb Chimera InstagramJamie Clubb BooksMusic "Dark Spirits" by Our Music Box Information on private lessons, seminars, webinars and the many different services offered by Clubb Chimera Martial Arts.

  • Martial Movie Massacre VIII: The Beginning

    17/08/2021 Duración: 59min

The annual Martial Movie Massacre event continues with this spotlight on 1980s US martial arts movies, the films that shaped the landscape for what I watched during my early training days.  Using 1988 as our spotlight year and a stand alone comic-strip, we will look into the major changes that took place in low budget world of US martial arts movies and the four icons that shaped what would come in the following decade. The 1970s martial arts movie scene had been largely dominated by the Kung Fu genre mainly imported from Hong Kong. Enter the Dragon, released in 1973, was the first Hollywood Asian martial arts movie and should have paved the way, but instead a huge void was left by the tragic death of Bruce Lee. It was only in the late '70s that some independent film-makers in the west believed they could change the face of western action movies by infusing them with a richer variety of fight choreography.  Shownotes/links: Clubb Chimera WebsiteClubb Chimera Facebook PageClubb Chimera TwitterClubb Chimer
