It's because of the over-individualization of faith that we struggle with this Gospel about plucking out eyes and severing limbs. Jesus is talking rhetorically, asking people to tend to their relationships. How can we broaden our sense, in the church, of who counts? In order to make the kind of change our world so desperately needs, we're going to have to grow our community.
