Landlords in Oakland, CA can no longer do criminal background checks. Here is why that is a stupid idea. Yeah, sorry, spoiler alert - a city government did something stupid - shocker. This one is a big deal tho. It reveals not only the Oakland city councils hypocrisy but also their general stupidity on how to actually solve a problem. We are going to talk about this one today and bring up some very unpleasant facts. For one thing, Oakland is basically asking landlords to flip a coin - you have a 50/50 chance that the person you rent to will commit a crime with this law. The really amazing part is that you are forced to be ignorant of that fact. Of course, my first opinion is that no government should be able to tell a land owner what they can or cannot do when it comes to renting their property. In this case tho, they are not even solving the problem they claim to be solving AND they are putting all the risk, cost and liability on the shoulders of landlords.
