Rene Clair's modern fable depicts Veronica Lake as a sass mouth dame who would no more wait for a man to make the first move than she would take a bus when she can fly on a broomstick. Forget Lake's noir femme fatales. She was born to be a comedian. Her bit of business with the matches in this picture never fails to be marvellous.
