One of the all time favorite carols has to be O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. This great hymn has an ancient background not only in its lyrics but also in the role it has played in the church over a millennia. How does the old testament promise of the coming messiah find its fulfillment in the birth of Jesus and why is this great hymn filled with strange titles for Jesus and even stranger promises of what will happen when he comes? 1.
