EPISODE #596 ROOM 237 - HIDDEN MEANINGS IN STANLEY KUBRICK'S "THE SHINING" Richard welcomes filmmaker to talk about his documentary, "Room 237" which explores various theories about supposed hidden meanings inside the 1980 psychological horror film, The Shining, produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The Shining, some cinephiles theorize is an allegory for the plight of Native Americans. Others, contend it's a prism through which Stanley Kubrick examines the Holocaust. And still others suggest the film may be Kubrick's confession to helping the government fake the moon landing. Rodney Ascher is the director/editor of the film ROOM 237, a documentary exploring the signs, symbols, meanings, and metaphors five very different people have discovered within Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING. He is the winner of the 2012 Fantastic Fest Award for Best Director, Documentary and the 2012 IDA Creative Achievement Award for Best Editing. Working with producer Vernon Chatman, he edited Andy Kaufman's first comedy album AND
