Sinopsis
The Knesset Constitution Committee is slated this week to discuss a controversial immigration bill being advanced by committee chair Religious Zionism party MK Simcha Rothman. Initiated against the backdrop of debate over asylum seekers, the proposed Basic Law: Entry, Immigration and Status in Israel, passed a preliminary reading earlier this year and aims to establish a legal framework for immigration and residency in Israel for those who are not eligible to immigrate under the Law of Return. It proposes sweeping immigration restrictions that have caused alarm among potentially affected population groups. These include international couples comprising Israelis and their non-citizen partners. KAN reporter Naomi Segal heard more about the concerns of the community from Gareth Williams.
