Israel Defense Forces are reportedly training 10 battalions to confront Israeli Arabs who could turn into a lethal fifth column and attack the country from within in a future multi-front conflict. Reserve Maj. Gen. Gershon Hacohen served with the IDF for 42 years, as a battalion, brigade, division and corps commander, as head of the military doctrine and training department, and as head of the National Defense Colleges. He told reporter Arieh O’Sullivan that this wasn’t a sign that Israel strategic doctrine was changing, but rather the realization of a new threat. Hacohen, who is a senior researcher at the Begin Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, said that if Israel didn’t act with enough might against Hizbullah or Hamas in the future, Israeli Arabs could see this as an opportunity for them.
