Today’s SME is a technology company with the goal of spreading higher-speed broadband services to remote parts of Ireland. He is not part of the official national broadband scheme but is making a difference in delivering higher speeds for the world of remote working that many of us want to live in. Patrick Cotter is the founder of Rural Wi-Fi and spoke to Joe on the show this morning.

Many of us wish we had the foresight and money to invest in some technology companies in their early stages. Jason Stockwood did that and was one of the early investors in last minute.com and one of the bosses of match.com. He is now the owner of Grimsby town football club. Today SIRO, a joint venture between the ESB and Vodafone, says it aims to have speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second for its customers in Dublin as part of its €50m investment. For more on this, Joe was joined by Ronan Whelan, the chief commercial officer with SIRO.

The iodine used by doctors to examine the internal organs is among the more crucial things for diagnosing issues within the body. Much of it is made in Co Cork by GE Healthcare and now the company has announced plans to expand its facilities in Ireland and hire 170 new people. It has been one year since Facebook rebranded the company to Meta and unveiled its vision for the creation of the Metaverse. Earlier this week Mark Zuckerberg gave further insight into the next iteration of the internet and the $1.5 billion VR developer eco-system. Newstalk’s Technology Correspondent, Jess Kelly looks back on the first year of the rebrand.

The EU’s stated goal is to create 100 smart and carbon-neutral cities in Europe by 2030. Among those cities are Cork and Dublin. Enterprise Ireland is the agency responsible for boosting exports from Ireland overseas. Last year the company is that it assisted exports worth more than €27 billion. But as we face into an uncertain future and possibly even a recession all around us, is that job made even more difficult? 4 Years ago Google alongside Twitter, Facebook and the main technology platforms signed up to a code of practice in which they promised to take down Disinformation or fake news before it spreads around the world.
