It’s always difficult for governments when it comes to spending money because everybody has their metaphorical hands out. But it is especially difficult for the current coalition to say no if their coffers are bulging with cash The Exchequer returns published yesterday showed exactly that. The state brought in €7.5 billion in tax receipts last month alone. That was buoyed by much better-than-expected VAT receipts as consumers continue to splurge, despite soaring energy costs and other global economic concerns. There are more Android smartphones in the world than Apple iOS phones and Samsung is the biggest smartphone maker in the world. Its latest Galaxy phone is out and will doubtless put it up to Apple which has been accused of issuing new phones with only minor changes over the past few years. There’s a new piece of significant EU legislation coming down the tracks for companies. It’s called the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive. It’s a new obligation for businesses to audit the impact of everything they do - not just on their immediate environment but also on their supply chains. The idea is to prevent abuse and even human trafficking anywhere up or down the supply chains. Barry Andrews MEP is the rapporteur or ‘the lead’ for one of the key committees of the European Parliament and he’s proposed some changes which will increase the number of companies impacted by these new rules. Barry spoke to Joe this morning on the show.

This time a year ago household finances looked pretty healthy. Then came the war in Ukraine and soaring inflation. But after a milder expected Winter and government support, household incomes are starting to look up. According to the Credit union sentiment survey, it’s at a 7-month high. But the mood music is still far below the long-term average. The economist Austin Hughes compiled the Credit Union survey alongside Core Research and spoke to Joe this morning.
